Any idea how to protect silver plated stuff?

Bought a beautiful ring, was silver plated brass - all this hand washing rubbed off the plating so is now just brass.

Bought a replacement - was going to paint clear nail varnish on it to stop it rubbing off again - will this work?

Also, does anyone know if I can replate the brassy one?

Thanks

Take the ring off when you wash your hands. The plating won't last on something you wear constantly, especially if it comes into contact with products containing alcohol like perfume and hand sanitiser. The plating can be re-done or just buy sterling silver or another metal which isn't plated. I had a beautiful gold plated bracelet watch. The plating wore off where it was in contact with my inner wrist, probably due to me wearing perfume, and I had an allergic reaction to the base metal so had to stop wearing it.

It's hand sanitiser and I can't take it off when I use that - I would never get anywhere!

It's impossible to find the same ring in solid silver.

You could ask a silversmith or manufacturing jeweller for a quote to make a copy in silver.
