And I can’t really return it..... yes I was stupid and bought it blind and online but didn’t have much choice given Covid.

Can anyone recommend a good mattress topper to make it more bearable please?!

Ikea?

Coldhandscoldheart · 05/09/2020 09:23

Not sure about a mattress topper, but you might find it softens up a bit. Our current mattress was like sleeping on a board the first few nights, then seemed to get better.

IKEA has some really nice toppers, and they also have a good return policy if you don't like them.

I just put a double duvet on mine, which is a kingsize bed. Under the sheet.

Cheap solution which would work for you while your mattress softens a bit.

FaffingForEngland · 05/09/2020 09:47

Devon duvets do a wonderful wool topper. It's not cheap, but it's lovely and will definitely soften up a firm mattress. Plus it keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, unlike many of the toppers made from other materials.

pinkbalconyrailing · 05/09/2020 09:52

is it newly out of the pack and was it rolled up?
if yes wait for a week or so.
and you absolutely can return a matress bought online if it doesn't suit.

Beaniebeemer · 05/09/2020 10:12

No it’s not a vacuum packed one. Just a standard mattress. It’s wayyyyy to firm. It may soften a bit but I don’t think it will soften enough....my old mattress was so good but it had dipped really badly.

Ooooh, what brand is it? I have the opposite problem. My mattress is well past needing to be replaced but I just cannot find one firm enough I’ve got DDD so I really need a firm mattress. Sorry - not what you asked I know Blush

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/09/2020 10:19

I have actually ordered one but it’s got a trial period so if it’s not ok I’ll be able to return it and look again....

I’ve got an Emma mattress and I find that very firm, if that helps. Bit too firm for me but I’m getting used to it!
FakeFlamingo · 05/09/2020 10:26

Simba topper - you'll be sleeping on a cloud.

PontiacBandit · 05/09/2020 10:29

I found most mattresses too hard when shopping for a new one this year. It was difficult to find a soft mattress and I dislike the foam ones but we managed to get a soft medium which was sprung.

Happynow001 · 05/09/2020 12:22

I bought a deep feather and down feather bed which sits on top of my normal mattress. It's very cosy. I bought mine (Northern Nights) several years ago but you can probably get similar elsewhere with a quick google. It's like sleeping on a cloud but with the support of the original mattress underneath. 🌹

Dunelm sell good toppers

2ndAugust · 05/09/2020 12:27

Same thing happened to us, ours was too firm. I bought a feather topper it’s amazing.

ladykuga · 05/09/2020 12:30

I agree re. Dunelm for toppers. Don't skimp on price of a topper though. I bought one for a king size for £150. Made a hell of a difference as it felt like sleeping on a brick before I got it.

longtompot · 05/09/2020 12:51

We bought a memory foam topper from Lidl of all places and it was really lovely. We now have a new mattress but I think it's a bit too soft (a medium instead of firm like our previous one) so I almost need a firm topper for ours. Unfortunately it has a built in topper, so I would be far too big for our sheets. The fitted ones are already at their limits! I have bought king size flat sheets which just about cope. I need sheet suspenders.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/09/2020 20:56

peanacat thanks DD has one but it’s not firm enough for me. My original mattress is a Myers, it’s still as firm as day one but it’s started to look really ropey in the fabric cover and is definitely over the recommended time limit. Trouble is Myers don’t do the same one anymore and I’ve not found anything anywhere near as good.

peanacat · 06/09/2020 21:22

Judashascomeintosomemoney Omg I find it so firm! I can only recommend you replace your ropey one with bricks Grin

Notverygrownup · 06/09/2020 21:31

@Judashascomeintosomemoney We bought the Casper, as the reviews said it was firmer than the Emma. It certainly is firm.

OP I thought we were going to have to send it back. It's so firm that I couldn't roll over, without either holding onto the edge, or leaning on my husband to get a push off, as there was no give in the matress!! I had a few back spasms in the early days - for about two weeks - from lying in such a different position to our old one, which was firm but had sagged. I'd have sent it back, but he loved it, so we hung on a bit.

Now, I love it! No more spasms, and I sleep really well on it. Give it a couple of weeks before you definitely decide to splash out on a quality topper.

cherryblossommorningstoday · 06/09/2020 23:20

Walk all over it for 30 mins, focussing a lot on your side. I read this online and was desperate so tried it! It helped.

Then, assess your pillows. I used to have 2 fairly hard ones. I bought a premium one from Wilko as my top pillow (much softer) and suddenly I was really comfortable which was a miracle as initially it was giving me back pain nightly!

I now love ours!
