What toothpaste DO dentists actually use?

So we've just seen an ad for OralB, which told us that four thousand per cent i can't remember the exact number of dentists use OralB. So do they? Or is another toothpaste the best? Or are they all basically the same and actually it's your technique that matters? Or just actually brushing regularly with whatever?

At my dentists', they sometimes give away free sample tubes of the latest Colgate Total or Oral B. Or, in other words, whatever the rep from Procter and Gamble or GSK is pushing that week. I asked one dentist what they recommended as there were so many different brands, colours and capabilities. She said as long as you use a fluoride toothpaste, it doesn't matter. Fluoride, apparently, is key. Anything else is just window dressing.

I use one of the Colgate Total pastes. Slightly abrasive as well as containing fluoride.

Whatever happened to Crest and Close-Up ?

Parkermumma07 · 04/09/2020 21:39

My sister is a dentist I can confirm she does not use oral B , haha she buys whatever is on offer at the supermarket!

Crest was my favourite toothpaste! It's so annoying they're impossible to find now.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 04/09/2020 22:31

Wtf did you think they made, cakes?!

I just want to scream this while shaking the simpering tart. I hate that advert.

NannyR · 04/09/2020 22:35

My dentist told me that as long as it has the recommended amount of fluoride (is it 1450ppm??) then it doesn't matter which toothpaste you use and what was more important was that you have a good brushing technique and floss (or tepee brush) regularly.

Blackbear19 · 04/09/2020 22:36

Eh, toothbrushes!
Oral B Toothpaste is relatively new is it not?

Vinorosso74 · 04/09/2020 22:39

NannyR that's what I got told too.
We always had Crest growing up as my mum worked for P&G and got their stuff cheaper in the onsite "product shop". We used to get Pringles crisps before they were easily available in the supermarkets (I don't really like them mind).

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 04/09/2020 22:39

Close up is back & sold in Superdrug! Best by far (I’m not a dentist though)

Owlpoorlypaw · 04/09/2020 22:41

If I’ve been eating my recommended daily portion of peppers then I definitely use Oral B.

I think they've taken the offensive line out of the advert now? possibly because so many people wanted to throw something at the annoying woman!

thedaywewillremeber · 04/09/2020 22:48

My dentist recommends Colgate.

porridgeface · 04/09/2020 22:50

When I worked in dental I just used whatever we got for free from reps, didn't buy toothpaste for years. Now I just buy whatever is on offer

Lol I want to punch that woman so much.
Parkandride · 04/09/2020 22:53

All toothpaste for 3s and up, I think, has 1450ppm fluoride, it's very controlled. So it doesn't really matter. Use your kids fun strawberry one if you want Grin

greensnail · 04/09/2020 22:54

Dentists I know just use whatever samples they have got free from the rep.

Anordinarymum · 04/09/2020 22:54

That was brilliant !
Cuddling57 · 04/09/2020 22:56

The sensitive ones do work though so not just all the same.

copperoliver · 04/09/2020 22:59

Mine says oral B. X

blueshoes · 04/09/2020 23:07

Sensodyne - they seem to keep pushing it on me (sensitive teeth).

Jaxhog · 04/09/2020 23:16

My oral hygenist always used to say they're all the same as long as they have fluoride. She also said the main purpose of brushing your teeth was to get the fluoride to all teeth surfaces and you should never rinse (spit any bits out) as that gets rid of the fluoride.

Anyone remember many years ago ( I'm talking 1974 ish) there was a solid toothpaste in a tin.
Either a red tin ( clove tasting) or blue (didnt like that one)

Twist the lid off, wet your toothbrush and scrub it in the solid block to get enough product .
Not a powder .

Gibbs dentifrice, I think.

Just found it on Google but now remember gibbs SR which is now mentadent.

And now I miss mentadent P. Not too sweet or frothy. I use corsodyl because I don't like sweet toothpaste.

CarolVordermansArse · 04/09/2020 23:29

Euthymol?

PickAChew · 04/09/2020 23:29

I had an uncle who used tooth powder and I loved the taste of that. It was actually sold as smoker's tooth powder!
