What toothpaste DO dentists actually use?

So we've just seen an ad for OralB, which told us that four thousand per cent i can't remember the exact number of dentists use OralB. So do they? Or is another toothpaste the best? Or are they all basically the same and actually it's your technique that matters? Or just actually brushing regularly with whatever?

I'm a dental nurse and I can confirm at our hospital we all hate the taste of oral B and we just use any old Colgate that's on the best offer.

bonzo77 · 05/09/2020 08:34

Dentist here. I use Colgate pro relief as it’s the only thing for my sensitivity. Anything with fluoride otherwise. Not euthymol!

The OralB one has been around for about 15 years. Maybe more. Doesn’t suit me.

I use regenerate. It’s on the pricey side but it’s one I’ve gotten on with really well

I used to work as a microbiologist doing oral micro research. The old Colgate total when it contained triclosan was miles more potent with regards to antibacterial activity than the nearest competitor (crest, oral b, arm and hammer). But triclosan has now been banned so they are all in my opinion pretty much the same.

yawnsvillex · 05/09/2020 08:50

Eythomyl is fluoride free so I'd be surprised if a dentist would recommend it.

pinkbalconyrailing · 05/09/2020 08:54

the dentists I know use the big brand freebies they get.
apart from special toothpaste for sensitive teeth or gum issues they are much of the same. the cheapest own brand supermarket one is essentially the same as the basic big brand one.

Kingfisher fennel is the best tasting (not a dentist)

Mrsmorton · 05/09/2020 09:04

Dentist, use Maclean's whitening as it's 99p in home bargains.

If you use spearmint toothpaste, you're probably a serial killer.

Taikoo · 05/09/2020 09:18

Corsodyl.

Have you done a thesis on this Spearmint : Serial Killer correlation there MrsMorton Grin

If you worked as a Prison Dentist you could as part of your case history enquire about their dental hygiene product of choice "Oh , that's interesting there Mr Slash'n'Go , so you used SpearmintyScrub since childhood eh? "

What does Charcoal toothpaste say about a person? Apart from having to be very careful when spitting , it gets bloody everywhere ! .

I use birds dream topping or Madagascan vanilla custard when I’m feeling flush.

Disclaimer: I am not a dentist.

@BinkyandBunty I first found the little pumice things in a good chemist, they are a bit like the tiny headed brushes (which I use with the powder) but with a little pointy thing on the end.

Found them www.amazon.co.uk/Polishing-Isend-Cleaning-Whitening-White-Blue/dp/B07PX873S9/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=teeth+stain+remover+tool&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1599298545&sr=8-5

BubblyBarbara · 05/09/2020 10:42

Sensodyne but the one that rebuilds enamel which is valuable in anyone getting older even without sensitivity

longtompot · 05/09/2020 12:44

@AnnaMariaDreams

Dentist. I don’t like Oral B. It has stannous fluoride which dehydrates the oral mucosa and causes sloughing. I mostly use free toothpaste if I can. I like Colgate or Sensodyne. As long as toothpaste has 1450ppm fluoride I am happy.
Do you mean it causes the lining of your mouth to peel? I've had that with a few toothpastes, OralB and a new Sensodyne one. I was peeling huge chunks off the inside of my mouth, so grim.

My dh loved Mentadent SR and was gutted when he could no longer buy it. Still trying to find a suitable replacement, though Colgate Total is pretty good. He finds they all foam too much which SR didn't. I have sensitive teeth and only used the SR when I wanted a really fresh mouth, after a coffee etc. I use Sensodyne sensative toothpaste but I think it's not working as well so might go back to Corsodyl (even though it makes me gag a bit when I initially start using it. Hate the taste.)

Mrsmorton · 05/09/2020 16:01

@longtompot it's usually the sls that causes foaming. Some sensitive toothpaste doesn't have it in so dh could shop around.

I got a free sample of Arm and Hammer baking soda toothpaste years ago, and have used it ever since. Much prefer the taste to the peppermint ones.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2020 16:14

Arm and hammer baking soda is lovely!
