What toothpaste DO dentists actually use?

So we've just seen an ad for OralB, which told us that four thousand per cent i can't remember the exact number of dentists use OralB. So do they? Or is another toothpaste the best? Or are they all basically the same and actually it's your technique that matters? Or just actually brushing regularly with whatever?

Actually I think Euthymol in a tin might have been before that and I can't find any evidence of it.

What was the pink one that dyed your mouth to make your teeth look white (also 60's/70's)?

CarolVordermansArse · 04/09/2020 23:34

PickAChew, I have a tooth powder that is for smokers, bought it to remove tea stains, Eucryl.

Is it any good? I bought some before to try but never got ground to it.

DD and her housemates had all been shopping and stocked the fridge. Many tray bakes and stir fries obviously planned. The photo of her fridge was simply titled "I know how to look after my heart......" a fridge full of peppers Grin

CarolVordermansArse · 05/09/2020 00:28

toiletpaper, it does take some of the stains off but you need to be careful not to use it too often as it is abrasive and will damage the enamel, also make your gums sore if you are a bit enthusiastic with it.

I also have some little pointy things like tiny pumice that does similar but in a more specific area if you need to get in between teeth.

Can anyone remember a weird clear red toothpaste from the 70s? It had a very odd flavour, not sure what. Maybe called Signal?!

Overthegardenfence · 05/09/2020 00:39

Wasn’t signal the white one with clear blue stripes?

Overthegardenfence · 05/09/2020 00:41

I think I can remember a Clear red one too , can’t remember what it was called though

BinkyandBunty · 05/09/2020 00:41

@CarolVordermansArse can I ask where you buy the little pumice things, or what they're called? Sounds like what I need.

drigon · 05/09/2020 00:41

Ah, no. I should have Googled this! It was Close Up and it has been relaunched, as someone mentioned. The red one is apparently cinnamon.

Overthegardenfence · 05/09/2020 00:44

Was the red one called close up?

Overthegardenfence · 05/09/2020 00:51

Cinnamon lovely 😊 remember that cinnamon chewing gum you used to get?

TonytheDog · 05/09/2020 00:52

I haven't seen that advert but I remember the red toothpaste (70's child). I think we only got it once because we nagged my mum into submission. Also we ran out of toothpaste we had to brush our teeth with salt! Also had to use washing up liquid for shampoo. It all seemed quite normal though, pre- internet days we all loved in bubbles.

I do remember we used to get the odd red tablets that showed up plaque. I loved those! I've tried to find them for my DC but maybe they're illegal because they were actually really bad? I'm off to Google.

PotholePalace · 05/09/2020 00:57

My dentist sings the praises of Corsodyl, and it has improved the state of my gums. I used to like Mentadent P. In the late 80s?? my dentist told me to use an Oral b toothbrush, I'd never heard of them before that.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 05/09/2020 00:57

I use either sensodyne or the total sensitive. They’re the only ones that keep my sensitive teeth happy. Dentist said it didn’t matter as long as I was brushing thoroughly.

You can buy those tablets from the dentists. I bought some from mine last year!

I miss Gordon Moores toothpaste from the 70s. It was bright red and made your teeth look really white.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 05/09/2020 01:12

UK dentists I believe (subject to marketing deals) prescribe these high fluoride toothpaste:

Colgate Duraphat 2800
Clinpro 5000
SF 5000 plus
Colgate Prevident 5000, and
Denta 5000

I only tried the two Colgate-Palmolive products. I understand most popular shop brought (non prescription) toothpaste sold in the UK are generally all marketed by GlaxoSmithKline, Procter & Gamble, Unilever. So probably much of a muchness as not sold by brand names which are also sold as another marketing brand for the same product in different international markets. I tired organic natural health shop herbal toothpaste but never found one I personally liked so always back to good old Euthymol usually. I am a long term user and fan of Euthymol - an American brand of antiseptic, fluoride free toothpaste distributed by Johnson & Johnson that is characterised by its bright pink colour and medicinal taste. The active antiseptic ingredient in the product is thymol along with eucalyptus oil. Sometimes for a change I use Marvis Aquatic Mint an Italian heritage brand. Arm & Hammer is another brand I occasionally use. These are baking soda-based toothpaste marketed by Church & Dwight.

@TonytheDog Disclosure tablets I believe

Redruby25 · 05/09/2020 01:17

Blackbear19 No they have had paste out for years now

differentnameforthis · 05/09/2020 01:27

Free samples...

When I was a dental nurse I didn't buy toothpaste for yrs.

TonytheDog · 05/09/2020 01:46

@bluebellforest and @ladypete thank you. I found them. I thought they were a relic of my past and I'm sure I looked for them when DC were younger. I'm going to order some. Exciting times.

Mine say as long as they have flouride any brand even supermarket own.

AnnaMariaDreams · 05/09/2020 05:55

Dentist.
I don’t like Oral B. It has stannous fluoride which dehydrates the oral mucosa and causes sloughing.
I mostly use free toothpaste if I can. I like Colgate or Sensodyne.
As long as toothpaste has 1450ppm fluoride I am happy.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/09/2020 08:23

Gibbs dentifrice,
That's the one PickAChew thanks Grin

I could remember some details and the red one but not the name .
