How old do you think the person who wrote this poem is?

Please help me with this minor argument Grin
How old do you think the author of this poem is?
It’s the second draft. Finished other than missing the 2nd line of the first couplet....

You are my daily sunshine with harmony and peace.

Every night I think of you when I see the brightest star,
So if we’re in different places it doesn’t seem so far.

In my heart I will always find a place for you,
The only thing that’s blocking us is not true.

When I see the smile on your face it makes me feel okay,
And takes me up to heaven every single day.

Together our imaginations run wild and free,
You are the one who will comfort me.

So next time I see you I know I am at home,
But now I think of you and I’m not alone.

Never mind OP. This stuff sells. She'll be out-earning us all writing inspirational fridge magnets by her mid teens.

I don't think she stop there. That sort of writing has "Hallmark" as its... well...hallmark.

Has there recently been a bereavement in your family, or was it a poem about something she's read as the sentiment is quite mature for a child.

I wondered if it was a reaction to all the talk about not being able to see and embrace family and friends.

Young from 9-10 or and elderly person. Could be any age depending on ability though.

I'd of said 11. 1st year of secondary.

OllyBJolly · 04/09/2020 09:38

MIL a convinced it’s amazing and a sign of genius

Isn't that what grandparents are for? My grandfather was my champion which was great for me as my parents were right into belittling.

I aspire to be that rock for my GCs.

thewhitechair · 04/09/2020 09:40

I think it’s pretty good for a 9-year-old in all fairness

I was thinking exactly the same Smile
And it can give parents the chance to have a little show off about our (I wasn't blameless, but mine were pre SM) children, while being able to deprecatingly say "Ooh, MiL's a one - she thinks X is a genius".

It was ever thus and perfectly natural.

And I'm sorry that your parents were belittling. Good for your grandfather.

TimWasMeanToMe · 04/09/2020 10:14

I think it's more a statement of your MILs lack of exposure to actual literature

Yes I agree with this.

Elderly, under-achiever at school, no tertiary education but keen reader of romance fiction and cheaper women’s magazines like Women’s Own.

stillfeelingmad · 04/09/2020 10:22

Haha @LightDrizzle showing a classic 'I haven't read the thread' response and desperate to get a dig in Grin

Op I agree it's good for a 9 year old and lovely that she's interested in creative writing!
Grandmas are meant to think their grandkids are a genius it's in the job description

LightDrizzle · 04/09/2020 10:23

Ha! Just read the rest of the thread! I was sort of right, in a very wrong way.

You must keep these to torture her when she is a sophisticated woman of the world at 18.

It’s fantastic that she is writing poems, I’m sure if any of mine from that age survived/ever existed, they’d be monumentally smug and pompous and far worse than your daughter’s sentimental but sweet offering.

What a nasty judgement. Are you poet laureate yourself?
joystir59 · 04/09/2020 10:27

It's a dreadful poem.

mollymawk · 04/09/2020 10:30

I think people are being a bit harsh on both the poem-writing and the MIL. I think it’s great that DD is writing poetry at all and should be encouraged. And surely it's a key part of the role of grandma to think their grandchildren are genii (?) in a totally biased manner?!

Kittykat93 · 04/09/2020 10:31

It's written by a 9 year old ffs. Shame on the bitter nasty people who come on just to slag it off even after knowing the age of the author.

Tempusfudgeit · 04/09/2020 10:31

It's a dreadful poem Ahh, you must have attended the 'bucket of cold water' style of parenting classes that my mother did!

LightDrizzle · 04/09/2020 10:35

Well it turns out it was written by a 9 year old, who her mum admits currently has a writing style of a sentimental granny - I hadn’t read anything but the first post when I wrote what I did.

Growing up I read anything I could get my hands on, including Readers Digests and Women’s Own type magazines in waiting rooms, the poem is VERY reminiscent of the “Readers Contributions” sections.

So yes, I thought what I posted, that it was someone like my grandma, who had little education but was a voracious reader of romance and RD. It’s still great that people write poems. I paint, badly, must we pretend I’m really brilliant at it to justifying me continuing? I’m also a mediocre piano player, if I posted a clip on YouTube I’d get loads of feedback pointing out the flaws in my performance.

vapeinafleshlight · 04/09/2020 10:36

My dreams of you are comforting, like a fluffy furry fleece Grin

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 04/09/2020 10:37

I dont think it makes someone think you are well educated, or particularly literary if you write rude comments about a 9 yr olds poem! It just makes you look like a knob

I think thats very good for 9

caringcarer · 04/09/2020 10:37

10 upwards.

FOKKYFC · 04/09/2020 10:39

A 53 year old woman who wears jumpers with Jack Russells machine-embroidered on them.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 04/09/2020 10:39

@lightDrizzle presumably your not 9...

jellybean85 · 04/09/2020 10:40

@joystir59 you might want to re think the username writing comments like that after the op said a while ago the writer is 9!

@LightDrizzle I think constructive criticism and feedback are fine but people are being plain nasty even after finding out it was written by a child!

PickACoolUserName · 04/09/2020 10:42

Oh that's cute. I was a little worried at first that you were the author and had posted because you believed you were the next Sylvia Plath and wanted affirmation Grin

CarrieFour · 04/09/2020 10:43

I was going to say 8-10.

My 7yo DD makes up songs with similar fruity/emotional wording. The "sunshine" gave it away for me. But this is a bit more put together than my DDs so hence why I think a year or two older.

Always about the sun or moon/stars here too.

It's lovely when they can be creative in this sort of way.

But I don't think you need to be contacting a publisher or anything just yet. Certainly encourage her hobby though. A very nice outlet.
