How old do you think the person who wrote this poem is?

Please help me with this minor argument Grin
How old do you think the author of this poem is?
It’s the second draft. Finished other than missing the 2nd line of the first couplet....

You are my daily sunshine with harmony and peace.

Every night I think of you when I see the brightest star,
So if we’re in different places it doesn’t seem so far.

In my heart I will always find a place for you,
The only thing that’s blocking us is not true.

When I see the smile on your face it makes me feel okay,
And takes me up to heaven every single day.

Together our imaginations run wild and free,
You are the one who will comfort me.

So next time I see you I know I am at home,
But now I think of you and I’m not alone.

Or older if they read a lot of shit magazines.

Humbersider · 04/09/2020 08:33

It's the sort of thing 72 year olds submit to our parish magazine.

AlexaShutUp · 04/09/2020 08:34

Come on, then, OP? Are you going to tell us?

Any age from about 12 to 80!

You are my morning fry-up all swimming in its grease'.

Thanks everyone. It’s by my Dd who is 9. MIL a convinced it’s amazing and a sign of genius. I think it’s fairly standard for an admittedly over sentimental child.

Any other suggestions? Grin

She writes fairly well for her age, OP, but not a sign of genius I'm afraid!Grin

Unusual content for a 9yo though.

Humbersider · 04/09/2020 08:47

Tell your DD that it's fab that she's into writing poetry, and she should definitely carry on. Has she been introduced to the delights of metre yet? Trochees and spondees will blow her mind.

TimWasMeanToMe · 04/09/2020 08:47

Thanks. I’m with you on the ‘not a sign of genius’.

Her writing style has always veered towards sentimental grandma. I pity her future grandchildren!

It's cute.

None of mine had moved beyond rhyming 'you' with 'poo' at that age Grin

Tempusfudgeit · 04/09/2020 08:51

I think it's more a statement of your MILs lack of exposure to actual literature. Keep encouraging your daughter, but please don't let the MIL tell her she's a genius. The best writers get that way through reasoned critiquing, reading and lots of practice.

Humbersider · 04/09/2020 08:53

Never mind OP. This stuff sells. She'll be out-earning us all writing inspirational fridge magnets by her mid teens.

YourVagesty · 04/09/2020 08:57

I love reading these out to my DH. It always gives us a good laugh Grin

mathsmonster · 04/09/2020 08:58

It does not scan properly, so I would say a 6/7 year old?

Grellbunt · 04/09/2020 09:01

It’s good for a 9 year old!

YourVagesty · 04/09/2020 09:02

Yy. I have to agree with this. It's always weird to me that people applaud this sort of poem when it's clearly a form that can be replicated by children (as proven on this thread).

That said, I don't want to diminish your daughter's achievement OP because she's 9 and should be very proud of what she's done. I hope she continues to work on her emerging talents and has a lot of fun exploring poetry.

When grown adults read these sorts of poems out at weddings and whatnot, it bewilders me that people consider them good.

TheOrigBrave · 04/09/2020 09:02

It's nice. I've read your answer now but I think I would have said late Primary age.
Has there recently been a bereavement in your family, or was it a poem about something she's read as the sentiment is quite mature for a child.

She's good, but not a genius. It's really nice your MIL thinks she is though.

Mochudhu · 04/09/2020 09:03

I'd have said 10.
