What is the attraction to cauliflower?

I have tried it on occasion but its bland.
The last time I had cauliflower cheese was when I was a kid and promptly threw it back up. Cheese sauce is fine.
I've also discovered that Branston pickle has cauliflower in and so does piccalilli, obviously. Maybe thats why I dont like those particular pickles.

You’ve just never tasted my Aloo Gobi Wink

grey12 · 04/09/2020 04:54

I agree with you OP.

I used to be an incredibly fussy eater as a kid. I only ate a handful of vegetables in specific dishes. Since then I have super extended my repertoire Grin however cauliflower doesn't appeal to me at all! I hate beans, hate the smell, hate the texture! But cauliflower... I just don't seem to be interested in it. Is it the colour like PP said? I really enjoy brussel sprouts (well done! Not chewy...)

BitOfFun · 04/09/2020 08:26

I think I'll try it again this week, but roasted and with butter, salt and pepper. How bad could that be?

Mrsmophead · 04/09/2020 08:30

I absolutely love it in all its forms. Buffalo cauliflower (the vegan buffalo wings) is a thing of glory. I go to a particular pub that serves them just for them. I am a meat eater but I don't like chicken.

Homemade cauliflower cheese is one of my absolute favourite dishes.

I've not tried cauliflower rice as I don't eat rice so I didn't need a substitute 😂

Roasted (or air fried) with a sprinkle of garlic powder, salt and a squeeze of lemon juice is divine. I have a full one to myself, it doesn't look that much when it's done!

And YY to buffalo cauliflower.

I love cauliflower. When I was a kid, my grandma used to pickle it and store it in those enormous old sweet jars. I once ate a whole jar in one sitting Blush. We ate cauliflower lot generally though. My mum said it was a great (and cheap) source of vitamin C.

I hate Brussels sprouts though. Work of the devil.

bruffin · 04/09/2020 08:39

Best soup we have had out of soup maker was a cauliflower cheese soup.

Longdistance · 04/09/2020 08:43

I love cauliflower. I love it in a curry, cauliflower cheese, roasted, boiled. Jamie Oliver did a recipe the other week where he boiled cauliflower in milk, blitzed it and added it to spaghetti, it looked bloody delicious.
I’m going off of broccoli, it seems like the poor relation.

Roussette · 04/09/2020 08:45

I flippin' love cauli but draw the line at 'cauliflower steak' instead of a juicy proper steak.

Cauli in curries, cauli soup is delicious and as for cauliflower cheese - we have it at least once a week!

GolightlyMrsGolightly · 04/09/2020 08:45

If yo7 want to try broccoli Then steam it lightly or blanch it then put in oven in a tomato sauce with cheese on top.

WankPuffins · 04/09/2020 08:48

It’s my favourite vegetable. I’d eat it everyday.

But not in the form of cauliflower rice - that is the work of the devil.

BabyLlamaZen · 04/09/2020 08:54

Agree that when you roast it and it caramelises YUM

But yes, generally kind of bland. Still a veg though so I eat it!

bumblingbovine49 · 04/09/2020 08:54

I love cauliflower, roasted, curried, in cheese sauce . All delicious.

Cauliflower rice though bleugh!!!

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/09/2020 08:57

I love cauliflower but cauliflower rice was just plain unpleasant. Cauliflower cheese with bacon is one of my favourite meals. Bit hungry now.

diplodocusinermine · 04/09/2020 08:59

Roasted with cumin, coriander, turmeric, spike of chilli - delicious.

Also cauliflower fritters with indian spices in the flour (and the batter made with besan flour), with a mango chutney dip.

What does broccoli cheese taste like?

Well, if you've had cheese you'll find it tastes a lot like that.

minnieok · 04/09/2020 09:10

I love cauliflower (and Brussels)

BikeRunSki · 04/09/2020 09:10

Oh, I do like cauliflower, just nit dip Robin the pressure cooker for20 mind like MiL does it! Roasted, curried, soups, raw with dips...

Aren't most vegetables 'bland' without decent seasoning??

No! Lovely sweet carrots and roast parsnips, slightly spoicy celery, earthy beetroot, rich irony kale and Savoy cabbage....

Cheetahfajita · 04/09/2020 09:36

How do you roast it? Just chop it and put it in the oven?

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 04/09/2020 09:43

As is often the case with veg, cauliflower is really lovely if you cook it as (for example) people in south Asian tend to cook it. But it’s not as nice (or even actively disgusting) if cooked in a traditionally British manner.

Cauliflower cheese is ok (mostly it’s pretty bland, even if it could potentially be much better). The boiled cauliflower my grans used to serve up was truly horrible.

GolightlyMrsGolightly · 04/09/2020 09:47

Romanesco, a kind of cauliflower, is beautiful to look at and tastes lovely just lightly cooked.

Most veg needs a bit of help though.

TwizzledTurkey · 04/09/2020 09:49

I bought into the Keto lie that cauliflower rice is an amazing substitute for actual rice- well that was bullshit! Watery and bland and not even a good texture, I would rather go without!

Northernsoullover · 04/09/2020 09:52

Deep fried in batter is amazing!

WaltzfortheMars · 04/09/2020 09:53

I think the blandness in taste that it makes it great veg. You can cook it in a lot of ways and use it in different dishes. Even raw pickled one was surprisingly lovely.

SummerSummerSummertime · 04/09/2020 09:55

Cauliflower cheeeeeeese!!!! Mmmmmmmm Grin🧀
