Do I need to get a new phone?

I have an iphone 5s. It is my main phone. It is nearly four years old.
I have been nursing it along for the past year or so as doesnt hold its charge well and I always have to take a power bank with me.

Was working fine today, had one of those days when it kept ringing etc.

This evening i get a message from apple telling me I can not make or receive texts or calls until updated.

So I google this as phone is telling me it is updated. So I stuck phone into pc via usb and went on itunes to update that way. That also tells me phone is updated but I can still not use the phone for calls and texts. Internet is fine, i am using phone now for this message.

I can not call apple support until tomorrow as they are shut. (I do have a landline but do not make outgoing calls obviously will have to tomorrow).

I am wondering if it will be a waste of time to call them and I have come to the end if the road with this one and need to update. Could not come at a worse time from a financial pov. Just my luck lol.

Any other iphone users had an issue like this?

Maybe try backing up your photos and such and do a factory reset? I'm an Android girl though so no idea if it will help.

Good old apple, they will only update xx of previous models, I knew the original iPhone and ipads/minis were useless and can't be updated so looks like they have pulled the plug on the 5's too.
