What would you do- finish course or not?

My business went belly up when covid hit. I was eligible for a local FE college free online course for people affected by the pandemic so I applied and got a place. It’s a city and guilds level 2 IT course. It was an 8 week course run on teams. The tutoring sessions have now ended. Half way through the course I got a new job and wasn’t able to make any of the online classes but spoke with my tutors and agreed to catch up in the evenings. My new job has been a really heavy workload and I just haven’t been able to catch up with the course. I keep in contact with tutors but they need me to have finished the second unit now and I've 3 weeks to complete the last one the content itself is no problem, I understand it all but the volume of evidence I have to produce to demonstrate my understanding is huge. Every time I get a chance to sit down and do it I feel so overwhelmed and there is also feedback I have to correct on work already submitted. From Monday my work schedule increases even more. I can’t see how I will get this course finished on time. Should I just email my tutors apologise and tell them I can’t finish it? I feel bad because it was a free course and it would be a useful qualification on my CV.

What would you do?

It’s only 3 weeks. If you can I’d push the boat out and get it done.

SuzieCarmichael · 03/09/2020 20:57

If it is a useful qualification to have then I would do everything I could to finish it. Is there any chance of you taking any leave days from your main job? You could use them to catch up.

I would say (if you don't have young kids, or are pregnant) pull out all the stops and do your best to get it done. It's 3 weeks. That's not so long. You know it has an end date. Break it down into small bits, starting is always the hardest part. I always start by writing something and plan to change it at the end. At least then you know you gave it your best. Good luck!

It's 3 weeks of slog for a qualification you admit would be useful to you, I'm not really sure why you wouldn't just push to finish it. Ultimately you've been allocated funding that could otherwise have gone to someone who would have put the effort into finishing 🤷🏼‍♀️

tectonicplates · 03/09/2020 21:09

Get the course finished if you can. At a later date it's the sort of thing you'd regret dropping out of.

Smallsteps88 · 03/09/2020 21:19

Is there any chance of you taking any leave days from your main job?

Unfortunately not. The staff who were there before me all have lots of leave booked that they couldn’t use while furloughed so it’s not possible for me to take any.

I'm not really sure why you wouldn't just push to finish it.

It’s the sheer volume of work. I’m not sure I can physically fit it in to the time I have. I’m currently pushing and struggling. My thinking was that I am stressing myself out over something I haven’t a hope of completing.

Ultimately you've been allocated funding that could otherwise have gone to someone who would have put the effort into finishing

Unfair. I am putting the effort in. I’m just realising that the amount of work I have still to do is huge for the time I have left to do it. I wasn’t expecting to find work so soon when I applied for the course, others who are on it aren’t working. It’s not a case of me not putting in as much effort as them.

Any chance of explaining about the new job and asking for an extension ?

IlovecatsyesIdo · 03/09/2020 22:42

Could you ask about extending the deadline due to your circumstances?

Smallsteps88 · 03/09/2020 22:42

The 3 week deadline is already an extension. It was supposed to be finished last Friday but they very generously extended it because they know about the job.

I’m going to have a real bash at it and whatever the outcome, I’ve tried my best.

Thanks all.

Well that’s not at all creepy that you have been stalking me over MN. Grin

Had you bothered your twisted little arse to read the thread you’d have seen that I have already decided to crack on with my course.

You’ve got a cob on that I disagreed with you on your own thread so now you’re stalking me round MN trying to stick the boot in. Get a life.

That makes 259 by the way.

Smallsteps88 · 13/09/2020 18:48

Cringe for you

Have you checked that if you don’t finish the course in full that you won’t have to repay the course fee.

Smallsteps88 · 13/09/2020 18:52

I’m finishing the course @Tinypaws2. This thread is 10 days old. A troll has resurrected it to act out some virtual personal grudge they’ve decided to hold against me.
