8 month old no longer spoon feeding himself? Regression?

My eight month old could happily take a spoon from you and feed himself with it (twisting it around etc obviously) but would get most of the food into his mouth

Recently he's been refusing to do it himself and just cries and has a little paddy if you try to get him to do it, instead wanting to be spoon fed by us

I'm not sure if he's worked out it's quicker this way (he loves his food and can't get it in his mouth quick enough) or whether it's a regression/loss of a skill

He's also started intermittently refusing spoon fed meals so I was also wondering if it's more about wanting finger food but then if he wanted to feed himself surely he would spoon feed himself like he had been?

I'm not an expert but have an 11 month old who is always up and down with how she wants her food. If this is the only change I think you're alright.

My 10 month is similar. He was a really enthusiastic feeder at 6 months and happily ate from pre loaded spoons and finger foods, he is now refusing the spoon and making more of a fuss with the finger foods. I don't think it is a regression but just going through a fussy stage.

I'm hoping it's a phase!
He has a good grip otherwise and will happily be spoonfed pudding or fruit so I think he might just be getting more choosy
He's also good at picking up things like batons or melty sticks
