Enema! TMI but please help!

Hi.... sorry for the gross subject but please can anyone help?

I’ve just had to do an at home enema before a flexible sigmoidoscopy this afternoon.

I followed the instructions but it said to hold inside for 10-15 minutes if you can. I barely managed 2-3 before it literally started coming out (sorry...). Luckily I decided to do it right next to the loo. It was literally impossible for me to stop it.

Will it still have worked ok? Will they have to do it again at the hospital?

Sorry again for tmi...but really grateful if anyone has any experience!

I had mine done at the hospital. Like you I only lasted a few minutes. They did the endoscopy but he moaned he couldn't see anything clearly. You might need to have it redone. I have Crohn's and there was no way I could hold it a second later.

I ended up squatting in bath with bum up high in the air to keep it in until ready to dash to the toilet... Blush

I had a home enema fail a few years ago before a flexible sigmoidoscopy. The nurse at the hospital was quite unpleasant about it but it was just re-done by them. Just be honest. I’m sure it will be fine.

I'm suprised they didnt give you a proper bowel prep solution that you drink. Its clears you our much more than an enema does!

For an enema, you usually lie on a towel, on your side on a bed or as the other poster suggestion, naked in a bath with your bum up in the air to keep it in as long as possible. Best of luck.

Thanks all. @Flamingolingo in what way fail, as in you didn’t manage to do it or it didn’t work in some way? Nasty of the nurse to be rude though!

@Elouera I would have preferred something to drink, I can manage that! Yes I was lying on my left side with knees up as the instructions said.

Need to leave to get to hospital in half an hour, I haven’t needed to go to the loo since the initial time so I’m hoping that journey will be ok! Takes 40 minutes.

Feeling a bit faint though, not sure if that’s normal! It says I’m not allowed to drink anything after the enema though!

Bit of both. I was still a student so quite young. Struggled to do it, then couldn’t hold it in. Oh she was a right old bag but the outcome was still the same.

I’m so nervous of hospital staff being short with me, it’s happened before (definitely not my fault!) and it’s so unhelpful when people are generally a bit anxious going in anyway!
