Best supermarket birthday cake?

EachandEveryone · 31/08/2020 11:20

In all my years Ive never worked a birthday 🎂. Im a nurse so usually request it off. Anyway, I forgot so I need to buy a cake to take in. I thems the rules. So, I have M and S, Asda, Morrissons or Sainsburys nearby. Are any of them better than the other? Anything else I should take in?

Thanks in advance.

Can't believe no one's mentioned the Costco celebration cake yet. It's delicious and HUGE and only £15.
Sponge with strawberry jam and buttercream filling with a very light as air buttercream icing. It's amazing

BorisandHarriet · 31/08/2020 19:34

Clicked on this purely to recommend Colin. Anything else just isn’t as good.

Katjolo · 31/08/2020 19:36

By the sounds of it, I need to try Colin myself! Seem to be missing out.

Asda do a Clyde the caterpillar that’s half the price of Colin!
But, if you can get to a Costco, I completely second what a pp said about their large iced sheet cakes, so damn good.

JingsMahBucket · 31/08/2020 20:11

Funny, I was going mention Costco a few hours ago as well, when I first posted but I figured the OP wasn’t near one. Yes for American sheet cakes. I prefer those to usual British cakes.

MrsWhites · 31/08/2020 20:15

Aldi do a decent chocolate birthday cake, I’m sure it’s only £3.99. I find it much nicer than Asda’s cakes which I always think are very dry!

Vinorosso74 · 31/08/2020 20:19

I really want some cake now..... Am also intrigued as to why Connie is so inferior to Colin? I thought they just had different colour decorations.

EachandEveryone · 31/08/2020 20:24

No I dont live near Costco and its a good job really Im too greedy.

M & S rainbow cake! It's the best. In fact we bought one last week despite no birthday to celebrate Grin

PerditaNitt · 31/08/2020 20:35

M&S rainbow cake is lovely. The sponge isn’t overly sweet and the sponge is light. It is my favourite supermarket birthday cake option at the moment. Colin is a good second.

You might want to do smaller individual cakes if that is easier to serve quickly and neatly; the packs of four cakes from M&S are nice and you could do a mix of types.

We had this earlier in the summer and it was surprisingly good!!!

MoggyMittens23 · 31/08/2020 21:14

I had a Colin and was so disappointed, it’s so overhyped (IMO of course!)

dementedpixie · 31/08/2020 21:32

I don't like the Colin one as I don't like that it's got hard chocolate on the outside. I prefer ganache or other soft icing on my cakes

AntiHop · 31/08/2020 21:34

Sainsbury's do a box of birthday cupcakes.

Itshissister · 31/08/2020 21:56

Get yourself to Aldi and get a couple of their traybakes!

Itshissister · 31/08/2020 21:59

Or Cuthbert?Grin

Sainsbury’s white chocolate birthday cake . Best supermarket one I’ve tried.

Superfoodie123 · 31/08/2020 22:08

Colin is dry

ifoundafoxcaughtbydogs · 31/08/2020 22:26

Oooh. Might get a Colin tomorrow for no other reason than this thread.

DarkMintChocolate · 31/08/2020 22:30

Tesco’s chocolate caterpillar cake is the only birthday cake in our family! (Never had one from M & S, so cannot compare them)

minnieok · 31/08/2020 22:33

How many people are you buying for? Morrison's have an amazing indulgence triple chocolate cake serving 12-16

ShaunaTheSheep · 31/08/2020 22:38

My second choice after Sainsbury’s Wiggles caterpillar would be a Tesco chocolate cake, might be called triple chocolate and has mini Maltesers and other chocolate bits on top.

There will be four of us on the day shift and four on the night.
