I've worn my new top all of twice & it happened! I've just darned it as best I can & will put it on to ask dd1 if it looks ok shortly.

Has anyone worked out what they're caused by yet?!

I always assumed washing machine

BitchTitties · 31/08/2020 09:22

I thought they were caused by moths? 🤔

Tiggerdig · 31/08/2020 09:23

Mine are always in the same place. At the bottom of the top on the front. I assumed it was due to rubbing against kitchen worktops eg when cooking or washing up. Can’t think of any other logical explanation!

MinnieMousse · 31/08/2020 09:24

What fabric? If it's cotton then likely moths. DH gets little holes around the collar and shoulders of his cotton T-shirts made by moths.

YinuCeatleAyru · 31/08/2020 09:25

I have always assumed they were triggered by a cat claw, but I have never checked if there was actually a cause and effect!

BinkyandBunty · 31/08/2020 09:25

If you have stone kitchen benches and the holes are around that level, you have your culprit.

NannyR · 31/08/2020 09:25

I thought they happened because the top rubs against the jeans button or belt buckle. I only ever get them on that part of my t-shirt.

toomuchfaster · 31/08/2020 09:26

I thought it was the washing machine. I notice more when I overfill it!

BadDucks · 31/08/2020 09:27

I always get them in the same place at the bottom. I think it’s probably where it runs against trouser button or belt especially when wearing a seat belt. Bloody annoying though

Louise91417 · 31/08/2020 09:27

I had this problem with a lot of my tops once..it ended up to be something (can remember what) stuck in little holes of washing machine amd was piercing my clothes in wash..

I’ve got several t shirts which have this, always in the same place, and always tiny holes. Usually the flimsier type of fabric.
Several theories abound regarding this. I don’t see how it can be moths or the washing machine as it’s always the same area. I concluded it was to do with the button fastening on jeans or trousers rubbing on the fabric, and yes, leaning against worktops.
I iron that webbing over the holes, but it is annoying.

HeartZone · 31/08/2020 09:28

Kitchen work tops.
Try it with an old top, wear it ( back to front if holes in front) rub along work top sides. Inspect.

Coldwinterahead1 · 31/08/2020 09:29

I’m sure they are caused by trouser zips and fastenings

topofthewardrobe · 31/08/2020 09:31

I get it but we have no cats, bras are washed separately, no stone work tops and it's happened on t shirts I only wear with my leggings so no button or zip. I blame the seat belt in the car.

XiCi · 31/08/2020 09:34

It's from rubbing against worktops, belts and jeans buttons and poor quality cotton. I wasted so many tshirts this way then discovered these little button covers that go over your jeans buttons and haven't had any of those little holes since. Got them here

I have found the same as @NannyR. It only happens if I am wearing jeans, which have a metal button at the waist, and then the top rubs against the kitchen worktop, or if I wear the car seatbelt over the top. In the car I now make sure the seatbelt is on the jeans waistband and then my top is on top of that. Alternatively, elasticated waists on trousers and skirts are the way to go!

MNX42 · 31/08/2020 09:43

Moths. I'm battling an invasion of the little buggers at the moment.

They don't help, I still get the holes in my tops.

Same for me
Cloudyapples · 31/08/2020 09:46

I had this for months and eventually realised my belt buckle was the cause as the spike bit wasn’t flat the the buckle so it would then rub holes in my top as I eg lent on my desk when working

cautiouscovidity · 31/08/2020 09:52

I think it's where buttons / belts rub against the fabric of a top, particularly when you're rubbing against a worktop / sink ooh that sounded a bit saucyBlush

lucysmam · 31/08/2020 09:54

Oooh, the button thing makes sense, they are usually around that area! Maybe I ought to stop washing up and cooking so they don't happen any more? (I can just imagine the girls' faces if I actually did this!)

I don't think it's moths unless they're very picky about where on an item they nibble Grin.
