I've worn my new top all of twice & it happened! I've just darned it as best I can & will put it on to ask dd1 if it looks ok shortly.

Has anyone worked out what they're caused by yet?!

It’s not buttons and buckles. Well not for me anyway as I live in leggings. Kitchen worktops more likely.

StealthPolarBear · 31/08/2020 10:01

Yes you must be right, must be buttons on jeans!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 31/08/2020 10:04

I have the same problem. Cheap tee shirts and expensive ones doesn't matter. I thought it was the button on my jeans, and the worktops in the kitchen and also the seat belt in the car.
We need to start tucking in and see if it helps.
I've bought a ton more tops to replace all the holey ones this year yet again.

buttcrackmcheese · 31/08/2020 10:10

I know when I start getting holes in tops that I need to change the paddle things inside the washing machine.

LightDrizzle · 31/08/2020 10:10

It took ages for me to work out it was jeans buttons and particularly zips. I found that when I’ve been to the loo, I often leave the zip sticking out at an angle.

It’s so annoying when it’s a favourite top.

lookatallthosechickens · 31/08/2020 10:10

@DDIJ how do you 'not use worktops'? Do your kettle, toaster, and kitchen sink just levitate in midair?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 31/08/2020 10:14

It's buttons/zips/worktops/seatbelts all rubbing. It can't be moths or the washing machine because the holes are always in the same place (can you tell I've had this discussion many times with DH?).

I tried those button covers but they popped off every time I went to the loo!

NewAndImprovedNorks · 31/08/2020 10:16

See, I have always thought it was an insect irresistibly attracted to my belly button and trying its hardest to get in

My mind does wander

I think they're caused by my belt or the edge of the opening on my jeans. I sew them up otherwise I'd be buying new tops every 5 minutes!

BadEyeBri · 31/08/2020 10:21

It's always the bloody cats

DOINGOURBIT · 31/08/2020 10:29

But it's just happened to a relatively new M&S dress - so not buttons, waistbands, etc. Don't think it's worktops either, as I'm only 5ft and worktop is higher than the hole in my dress. I'm going with washing machine always finding the weakest spot in a fabric? --

MrsGface · 31/08/2020 10:29

If you’re wearing your top outside of jeans and you have stone kitchen worktops, that could be your culprit. I’ve started tucking my tops in when cooking, and I don’t get them anymore.

spookmeout · 31/08/2020 10:31

This drives me mad too.

I wondered if it was the car seatbelt too maybe

EstherLittle · 31/08/2020 10:37

It can be from where pins were put into the fabric to hold the layers in place when the fabric is cut or sewn during manufacturing. This makes a tiny hole in a cotton jersey fabric (which is a knitted fabric) and the hole just gets bigger after multiple washes.

NotMeNoNo · 31/08/2020 10:40

Jeans button on desk/worktop/seatbelt.

After a new top failing at FIRST wear I've bought some Hole button covers. holebuttoncover.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwv7L6BRDxARIsAGj-34pNvGTUqlsom4CMUXYuY4HJcpV4i4beqQjqEphEuABeara_d1-f8xgaAiJXEALw_wcB

NotMeNoNo · 31/08/2020 10:43

Ah, previously mentioned. Cheap jersey fabrics are inherently weak, that's why ppl were always darning stockings in the old days.

I don't wear a belt so it must be the sharp corner at the top of the waistband of the jeans. I get this all the time. So annoying!

diddl · 31/08/2020 11:10

@DDIJ

I don't have a kettle. I don't go in the kitchen most days.
Intriguing!
GabsAlot · 31/08/2020 11:15

mine always happens near the top i used to blame my cat but shes dead now

AbsenceOfBlinkinLight · 31/08/2020 11:20

I don’t know what causes it, but I do know that a belt with a flat buckle or a jeans button cover (like this - holebuttoncover.com/) seems to solve it. When I bought new jeans and didn’t use either the belt or the button cover, they came back.

Trikc · 31/08/2020 11:24

What annoys me is that it happens with some makes of tee shirt but not others. I’ve super cheap Asda tee shirts that it’s never happened to but almost every WhiteStuff tee shirt has the little holes.

FlamingoAndJohn · 31/08/2020 11:29

DH gets them, I do not.

Neither of us wear jeans. I do the majority of the cooking but DH makes hot drinks and washes up so about the same amount of contact with worktops. Both our clothes are washed together. I don’t have underwire in my bras.

DH wears a belt, I do not.

SerenityNowwwww · 31/08/2020 11:31

@Tiggerdig

Mine are always in the same place. At the bottom of the top on the front. I assumed it was due to rubbing against kitchen worktops eg when cooking or washing up. Can’t think of any other logical explanation!
Yes me too! I though it was months - but it’s not always natural fibres.
