I've worn my new top all of twice & it happened! I've just darned it as best I can & will put it on to ask dd1 if it looks ok shortly.

Has anyone worked out what they're caused by yet?!

It's so strange that so many people have these holes. I have never had them and I wear jeans/seatbelts, lean against work surfaces, put underwired bras in the washing machine without doing them up etc. I only wear fairly cheap tops too. AsI said, DH gets them in his t-shirts and I'm fairly certain it's moths as it only happens to cotton clothing.

I don't spin above 1200 though, maybe that could be a possible cause?

But why would moths only eat his clothes?
NewAndImprovedNorks · 31/08/2020 18:34

I tell you, this is the TRUTH

It is belly button beetles!

occa · 31/08/2020 18:35

Definitely not the washing machine, they're always in the same place near the button/zip area of trousers. I always guessed it was my car seatbelt rubbing as I do a lot of driving and it happens to all my tops.

It's super annoying.

PurBal · 31/08/2020 18:36

Moth? They're a nightmare.

triptrapdollydumpling · 31/08/2020 18:47

I think it’s something to do with the speed of the washing machine spin cycle and how big your washing load is - if it spins too fast the holes ‘suck in’ the flimsy material.

NotMeNoNo · 31/08/2020 23:00

I thought months went for wool/cashmere/protein fibre not cotton. Possibly if a thread has worn thin but not broken the action of the washing machine will pull it into an actual hole.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 31/08/2020 23:24

D'you know what, I am prepared to suspend all rules of logic and accept that there is a special breed of moths that probably live in my belly button that magically know where the waistband is on my tops and only eats holes there. Because that makes sense.

It's not moths if it's always in the same place. It's not moths if it's only tops. It's not moths if only one person's clothes are affected.

Babyroobs · 31/08/2020 23:26

@Greenteandchives

I’ve got several t shirts which have this, always in the same place, and always tiny holes. Usually the flimsier type of fabric. Several theories abound regarding this. I don’t see how it can be moths or the washing machine as it’s always the same area. I concluded it was to do with the button fastening on jeans or trousers rubbing on the fabric, and yes, leaning against worktops. I iron that webbing over the holes, but it is annoying.
Mine are always in the same place too but I rarely wear jeans or a belt etc, just normally soft leggings so i just can't understand what causes them.
NewAndImprovedNorks · 31/08/2020 23:54

Not moths.

Beetles

Daftapath · 01/09/2020 01:56

I think it's worktops/sinks and the surface cleaner gets onto the fabric and weakens it. Holes then form more readily when rubbed against the surface, belt or button. I wear mostly jeans, never a belt and don't really drive a huge amount these days yet still get these holes

Time40 · 01/09/2020 02:05

I wear jeans and belts, and I have never, ever had these holes.

Flaxmeadow · 01/09/2020 02:05

Bleach on worktops and when cleaning sinks. I had a friend who was bleach mad and she always had little holes on her T.shirts in the same place, at sink level

AlmondsAndChocolate · 01/09/2020 12:00

But why would moths only eat his clothes?
Do you have separate wardrobes? Perhaps his is infested and yours isn't?

dingledongle · 01/09/2020 12:04

Mine seem to be caused by me belt buckle- took years to work it out! Wink

Deathraystare · 01/09/2020 13:34

I get them all the time in tops and knickers! Deffo not Moths. In my case it is the washing machine. Nothing can be done as they are communal.

Your knickers are communal? Shock

Another vote for Holé here. I’m a total convert and no more holes in my tops!

It's your belt

But have you considered that it could be moths?

I’ve just ordered some, for I too am plagued by those picky moths that only nibble the bit of my top around the jeans button area, and mysteriously do not snack on other parts of the garment.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 01/09/2020 14:20

@BigBadVoodooHat I'm seriously considering moths Grin

cheesecrackersandchips · 01/09/2020 15:43

Cancel the moths anyone?

schmalex · 01/09/2020 15:45

I'm sure it's having a quartz/granite worktop. I used to get them all the time until we moved house. Now we have a cheap plastic worktop I don't get any!
