What to do about a manky thumb nail?

Minor in the grand scheme of things, but: Injury to my thumb a few weeks ago. Really painful, throbbing blood clot under the nail which A&E wouldn't drain as it wasn't far up enough the nail bed. Luckly (or so I thought), the blow caused a tiny corner of the nail to come away from the cuticle so i could 'lift' it and self-drain. The relief was immense.

Two weeks later and the nail has come away completely along the cuticle and half way up each side of the bed, but remains 'fixed' on each side towards the top. Fine except that the bottom of the nail keeps lifting, looks a manky green colour and is now very ragged. I am worried about dirt getting under the nail and it looks revolting. I almost wish it would just fall off now. Might that happen? Can I do anything?
