If your DC goes to bed at 7 what time do you/they have their evening meal?

I have one DD and she starts school this week. I'd like to have my evening meal with her more often but I find if I do I'm snacking again in the evening.

If your DC eats with you and goes to bed at 7, what time do you eat?

We used to at 5.15-5.30pm at that age. I’d have a slice of toast and peanut butter in the evening if I was actually hungry.

Findahouse21 · 30/08/2020 19:40

5:30, usually finished and cleared up by just after 6pm. Then watch TV and small amount of supper if she wants it. Bath at 6:30 and bed for 7, lights out by 7:15ish once we've had a couple of stories.

Sorry, forgot to add that we all eat at that time. Dh likes it because his meals has 'gone down' enough to do a long run most evenings at around 8

SandysMam · 30/08/2020 19:42

We eat with them at 5pm! After a while the body just gets used to and don’t feel too snacky, then go to bed at 9! I can’t be faffed doing dinner twice and clearing up twice. The only bad thing is means I start thinking about tea about 4pm which can be a pain.

Ragwort · 30/08/2020 19:42

It was a long time ago as DS is 19 now but he would usually eat early, around 6pm & DH & I would eat later. One of us would always sit with him when he ate and have a snack. If DH was away with work (quite frequent) I would eat with DS at 6pm as well.

Ragwort · 30/08/2020 19:43

Sandy must admit that DS's meal was usually our leftovers from the previous night so I never had to make two separate meals Blush.

Sexnotgender · 30/08/2020 19:43

We eat together at 5/5.15, don’t really snack later. Maybe a cup of tea and a little chocolate or small bowl of cereal if I’m peckish.

jenniuol · 30/08/2020 19:44

My ds generally goes to bed about 7, tbh he eats dinner virtually any time from when he comes home from school. Not sure if it makes a difference but he has SEN, autism and gdd. I don’t think he eats much at school so he’s always ravenous when he comes home. We both work shifts so meals can be at odd times anyway but if I’m off I mostly have a late lunch with him after school and then eat dinner with dh after he’s gone to bed. If we’re all off we can eat together obvs. He usually has dinner after school then a bath about 6pm and a snack after his bath. He is still sleeping all night eating like this which is an absolute bloody miracle in itself. He is 7 btw.

gingajewel · 30/08/2020 19:45

We all eat at 5.00. I agree your body gets used to it and I don’t snack really in an evening. I like to eat all together and I can’t be bothered to cook and clean up twice!

WaltzfortheMars · 30/08/2020 19:45

We never have eaten earlier than 7 since my dc was a toddler. Never went to bed before 9.

Frazzled2207 · 30/08/2020 19:46

During lockdown we have been trying to eat together at 6 but when they were at school they were eating about 5 and we were eating later. I expect it to go back to this tbh. They’re pretty hungry and tired after school.

itispersonal · 30/08/2020 19:46

We eat between 5/5,30 with dd 7yo. Though, throughout my life dinner has always been between 5 and 6 and we always eat as a family.

Though we are an early up (dp gets up at 4am and my df was a similar time) and to bed family.

keziahthecat · 30/08/2020 19:53

We all eat together at 5pm. I used to eat when they were in bed but we usually have breakfast at 6 and lunch at 11/12 so am hungry by 5! I clean my teeth afterwards and don't eat anything in the evening.

PseuDenim · 30/08/2020 19:58

I have a job so I can’t eat with him unless he wants to eat at 7/8, but I can’t really get round this. How do working parents manage to eat with their kids at 5 or 5.30?

Deelish75 · 30/08/2020 20:08

DD is 5 and goes to bed just after 7. We eat at 5. Bath at 6. Watches the CBeebies bedtime story then up to bed for a story. She mucks about a bit but is usually asleep by 8.

Marmite27 · 30/08/2020 20:09

Aim to be done with dinner for 6pm.

RidingMyBike · 30/08/2020 20:25

6pm. We then go straight into bedtime routine afterwards.

ProLapsedExerciser · 30/08/2020 20:30

We would eat at 6 when they were younger. Now DH has changed jobs and has a slightly longer commute plus kids activities means it's closer to 7.

How do working parents manage to eat with their kids at 5 or 5.30?
DH would leave for work anytime after 4am. He had core hours of 815-1130 and 2-4, the rest could be flexi as long as he worked his time over the day.

flummingbird · 30/08/2020 20:45

Thanks all. I might try for 5-5:30 and see how it goes. I don't want to feed her at 6 and then send her to bed an hour later, I can't get my head round that. I'll be eating with her 3 days and not the other 4 due to work (I don't get home til 6 those days), I just want her to actually get to have a sit down meal with me, it's so difficult!!!

@PseuDenim I work 8-4, 10 minute commute, husband 6-2. I appreciate we are lucky that we can eat all together at five.
