Please Smile

Desperately need to find some sandbags to be delivered to the Torbay area of Devon for an animal sanctuary about to be flooded due to sheer amount of rain and poor drainage.

Needed for delivery TOMORROW.

HAS to be couriered by DPD as they’re the only company who are willing to go to the property as it is so remote. No other company can be considered unfortunately.

Or anyone in that area who is kind enough and able to help and has vehicular access to go with some?

This is for a charity who quite literally are up a gumtree Sad

Any links to a company would be fantastic - thankyou xx

Wickes sell them £2 per bag if you have one local and someone can collect? I think it might be late in the day for any company to do next day delivery now at nearly 5.30pm?

PerkingFaintly · 27/08/2020 17:26

Keeping this bumped for you.

Soshelpplease · 27/08/2020 17:34

Thankyou @Cao77
I will tell the charity and ask them to let the locals know. Sadly their car got hit so are struggling with getting out now too....no pun intended but honestly, if it doesn’t rain, it pours Sad

Thankyou @PerkingFaintly
Much appreciated x

What animals are they, could someone local take them onto higher ground?

Siepie · 27/08/2020 17:42

I think you’re unlikely to find a shop that can do next-day delivery this late, unfortunately.

Have you posted in local Facebook groups etc to look for people with suitable vehicles to pick them up from somewhere like Wickes? Or could the owners/employees rent a car to do it?

Have you spoken to the local council? If you’re in Torbay council area, there’s information here about getting sandbags from the council www.torbay.gov.uk/emergencies/extreme-weather/flooding/flood-protection/

Soshelpplease · 27/08/2020 17:52

@WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat
Thankyou, there are too many Sad

@Siepie
Yep, we have called the council and they claim to know nothing about their own offer to provide sandbags! 🤷🏻‍♀️Sad

Car rental may be an option but I think logistically it may be too late and the animals can’t be left unattended. Both adults will probably be needed to lift the bags I guess.
I’m sorry, I’m not deliberately being obstructive. It’s the reality of them living so rural and having to put the animals first.

Thankyou for all ideas so far xx

Local reserve unit might be able to help?

ArseholesOnToast · 27/08/2020 18:03

Don’t know if they’ll be any good www.handysandbags.com/

There’s a mobile number.

I wish you all the luck with this.

FelicityPike · 27/08/2020 18:03

Their local council should be providing sandbags for residents and businesses that are potentially going to be flooded.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/08/2020 18:06

Ring the local radio station and ask them to put an urgent appeal out.

Notverygrownup · 27/08/2020 18:07

If all else fails OP, and you have a spade, you can make your own by filling women's tights - specially the thick ones - with earth.

Hidingtonothing · 27/08/2020 18:09

Local media? Might be willing to put an appeal online/FB for you and might also shame the council into providing them!

Yecartmannew · 27/08/2020 18:12

Use old t-shirts or blankets to create the bags (sew up or staple hem and arms then fill through neck and sew or staple, or sew tubes from blankets or towels then fill. They can be emptied and washed after) and fill with beach sand. Be sure to put the sand back after.

Good luck

DocOfTheBay · 27/08/2020 18:12

The Environment Agency usually distribute sandbags and other flood defences.

The emergency services (fire) will rescue animals from flooding.

Ellamiss · 27/08/2020 18:13

Twitter or Facebook might be an option? Maybe a kind builder that is local might see it and help.

Soshelpplease · 27/08/2020 18:17

Thankyou - I’m still reading while doing what I can x

Keep posting! Xxxxx

Local media/ social media will be your best bet, get word out and people will soon come forward to help.

CarolVordermansArse · 27/08/2020 18:33

Have shared on Facebook, and in some groups. Which sanctuary is it?

DianaT1969 · 27/08/2020 18:38

I assume you've tried local supplier Wiltshires?

queenrollo · 27/08/2020 18:42

google/social media to see if you have a local 4X4 Response team.
My husband volunteers for our local branch and this is the kind of thing they help with.

Malaya · 27/08/2020 18:50

If you share the name of the sanctuary, those of us who have Facebook can post appeals on our pages. At least we can spread the news quicker that way and, hopefully, someone can help.

Pluckedpencil · 27/08/2020 18:53

No help but keeping it bumped

Madvixen · 27/08/2020 19:00

If you're anywhere near a military base, give them a call in the morning and ask if they have any they can let you have.

jobobpip08 · 27/08/2020 19:03

Where I live what would work is facebook groups - but include ecycle etc wherever there is a really big audience, get local radio to give it a mention, tv if it's not too late to get it on local news? anyone with a big local following on facebook, twitter to share. local communities can be amazing, fingers crossed and good luck x

stillfeelingmad · 27/08/2020 19:04

Yes try local military, fire service and anything like mountain rescue.

Post on social media for local people
To show up with spades and dig trenches to divert water??

Make damns through the night if you can get the man power with earth mounds etc?
