Rachel from Friends fashion

Watching Friends reruns on Comedy Central and I'm struck by how Rachel's clothes look really nice even by today's standards. Everybody else looks proper 90s in the show. For those that watched Friends in the 90s, how were her clothes seen at that time?

Really nice

SheisMammyof2 · 25/08/2020 18:47

Yes most of her clothes have dated well.. apart from her wedding dress!

ShirleyPhallus · 25/08/2020 18:51

A few of her outfits I have always wished I could pull off:

  • the roll neck jumper / plaid skirt combo
  • that yellow strapless dress
  • that suit dress thing from the “I was walking in the foothills of mount tibidabo” episode
  • literally any of her pyjamas

She also looked significantly better than phoebe as a bridesmaid

Some of her outfits from series 1 and 2 are a bit dodgy though I remember a short flared skirt and knee length socks combo ....

ShirleyPhallus · 25/08/2020 18:55

Oh and that mint green dress that she wasn’t wearing any underwear with

I watched the wedding dress episode (the pilot, I think) and I thought it looked lovely!

The character worked for Ralph Lauren. It's a pretty timeless style.

ChaChaCha2012 · 25/08/2020 18:56

(I've still got some of their shirts from 1997!)

x2boys · 25/08/2020 18:56

But to be fair Jennifer Aniston was and still is very beautiful she could look good in most things .

0blio · 25/08/2020 18:58

I thought most of Phoebe's outfits were lovely, and still do. I don't think the women's clothes have dated much at all.

notheragain4 · 25/08/2020 18:59

I loved it in season....9(?) when she's just come back from maternity leave, sparring with Gavin, and she has a white work shirt without a collar, sort of sweetheart neckline almost off her shoulders, with a tie around her neck, that outfit has always stayed with me lol.

itchyfinger · 25/08/2020 19:01

Her pyjama style is amazing.

I'll have to check out that episode

I agree, in fact I was saying to dh that the show itself has aged really well.

Phoebe had a kind of hippy style that people still wear today. Probably more middle aged people though than 30-somethings

Still the funniest show around and the comedy translates amazingly well despite the fact that USA/English comedy styles are different. I think all the comedies that came afterwards tried to emulate Friends. I'm not surprised they were earning a million an episode each towards the end, even back then.

@EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide

You just mean stylistically right!!?

I love friends, and I’m fairly laid back about most stuff as a “product of the time” but I cringe at the misogyny, fat phobia, homophobia, lack of representation and diversity...

SanFrancisco49er · 25/08/2020 19:11

They were what everyone wanted. As a teen in the 90s I had loads of outfits modelled on Rachel!

And yes, her pyjama style was amazing -its still my pj style to this day! I loved her floral robe and socks in the episode where Phoebe gets married too (and her hair in that episode!)

AKissAndASmile · 25/08/2020 19:11

She had/has a lovely figure. Monica and Phoebe are slim, but Rachel is slim and curvy.

@AKissAndASmile I LOVE friends. But I think parts of it haven't aged well, it's quite homophobic in places and sometimes misogynistic, but it's very much of its time so as with anything it's just remembering the era it was written in. I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen each episode lol....a lot! I always come back to it.

showmethegin · 25/08/2020 19:24

I don't remember any homophobia in it? I do remember the first ever lesbian wedding being on it and how they dealt with it and I thought that was really ahead of its time, especially for America

LouisBalfour · 25/08/2020 19:28

Yes, apart from the wedding dress and odd frightful polo neck, Rachel's clothes haven't dated too much.

Poor Phoebe and her silly hair-dos and wacky outfits. Tbf they looked awful in the 90s too.

I can't remember any homophobia but I do think episodes like the TV stuck on porn one wouldn't be shown these days.

@showmethegin

I'm very tired after a long day lol so can't pick out specifics but quickly found this article:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.out.com/television/2019/10/01/heres-your-reminder-friends-was-really-really-homophobic%3famp

If you notice gay people will quite often be the butt of jokes, Chandler's dad, Carol etc. It's not with malice and as I say I still love the show, but you wouldn't see those kinds of jokes today.

AKissAndASmile · 25/08/2020 19:31

Not sure what's wrong with this wedding dress, seeing as it's 1994
