Do you always get three quotes?

Whenever you get work done in your home, do you always get three quotes ? Or at least more than one.

I’ve had a locksmith round to quote and he seemed so nice I’m tempted to accept the price. I can afford it but should I get at least another quote to compare? I don’t like wasting people’s time so probably just need to grow a backbone.

Looks ridiculous written out, so wondering what others do.

TIA

What normally happens is I contract about12 people, only 4 reply, only two turn up to quote and one of those is so astronomically high it seems likely they don't want the job.

So for relatively low value stuff, no I don't get three if the first one seems reasonable, because I don't have the time to be chasing for call back.

Depends on the value of the job - if it's relatively small then no I don't. If the company seems reliable and good quality then I tend to just go with them for the small jobs. It will take longer shopping around for more tradesman who may or may not turn up not to mention waiting in for quotes etc than the few pounds you might save

Getting any tradesmen to reply/turn up is such a farce that I tend to go with any who do...

Not if the quote seems reasonable and the tradesman is one we have used before or came recommended.

It depends whether or not you know if the quote is reasonable. If you have no idea of prices then it's better to get get another quote for comparison.

I do but only as I’ve learned the hard way.

It’s also good for peace of mind.

As others have said, it can take forever to get quotes from good tradies because they're busy doing paid work. So rarely get as many as 3 unless it's huge work like an extension or loft conversion (in which case checking they are really registered with bodies they claim to be may be more useful).

In practise we ask the person who quotes how they came to that figure. If they can explain what they will be doing to make X hours work for y people at so much per hour and such and such parts, then I go with it if it seems plausible. It's usually a good way to tell if they know what they're talking about - if they get evasive, then I'll look elsewhere.
