Orphaned mouse- advice please!

DH was clearing earth on the garden and accidentally disturbed a mouse nest. Only one baby mouse survived😥

It's currently in a box beside me, squeaking having spend the first 20 mins in DH hand.

It's got fur and ears but eyes still closed so we think less than 2 weeks old??

We've got a mini-hot water bottle in its box, a towel and some torn up kitchen paper that he has snuggled into.

DH fed him with some warmed milk in a teeny bottle belonging to some rubbishy toy or other of the DC! I see online puppy milk replacement is best but we've nothing like that and all shops closed of course.

Has anyone any advice? I'm seeing online info that they need feeding 1.5-2 hourly but don't know how long that needs to happen for, or when to give him other foods, if he even survives😔

We're willing to do our best for him. If he survives the night I'll go to local pet store for advice.

Any pearls of wisdom would be much appreciated. He's awfully small and adorable.

Oh so cute, does this mean he’s now your pet mouseHmm he won’t be able to be released now your hand rearing him?! Or will he, I know nothing about mice!

RedLimoncello · 28/08/2020 16:09

@NoMoreMrNiceGaius 😍😍😍

@LewisFan Creek Valley Critters has been my go-to! Looking at their set-up were definitely going to need a bigger tank! I want her to have branches and little cubbies to hide in and explore so will definitely look into this!

@Suzi888 yes, we now have a pet mouse!

What kind of mouse is it OP? Is it a house mouse, field mouse etc? Kudos to you it’s very heart warming and as another poster said I’m usually hard hearted towards mice considering the hell I’ve just had trying to get rid of an infestation in my house 😩

RedLimoncello · 28/08/2020 17:05

I think it's field mouse. It has a white tummy and looks like the pics online. The internet tells me they smell less than house mice so that's nice.

@RedLimoncello have you ever read Stuart Little (EB White)?

Elieza · 28/08/2020 18:03

It’s defo a little field mouse. Gorgeous.

A house mouse has a smoother coat as it doesn’t live out in the harsher weather it doesn’t need it, and it has a slightly different shape, thinner and longer.

I had three pet house mice as a child. Loved them. All my pals had hamsters. I was the odd one out as my dad got me mice as he had them when he was young.

My cat sometimes brings field mice in and I always try and rescue them as soon as I can, poor wee mites.

MimsyBorogroves · 28/08/2020 18:15

So cute. Thank you for looking after her.

RedLimoncello · 29/08/2020 07:38

@Bloodybridget no I haven't but I'm going to the bookshop in town to order books today so I'm adding it to the list!

@Elieza thanks for confirming! I'm definitely team mouse now😊

I hate to sound pushy but I'm getting mousey withdrawal....can we have an update?

RedLimoncello · 30/08/2020 07:46

@ChildOfTheNineties 😁

Whiskers is doing really well! She's getting more active but still loves snuggling up beside her hot water bottle.

We're starting to wean her now. Mouse led weaning🤗 Just giving her a few licks of porridge and soaked ryvita.

I made her a beautiful (I thought) artisanal platter of blackberry and sunflower seed but she just left a small wee in the middle of it. Kids eh?

She watched a bit of Persuasion (the Amanda Root version) from the comfort of my hand last night, falling asleep after about 5 minutes in a similar fashion to DH whenever he is forced to coexist in a cosy room with a costume drama.

She's just lovely. It's like having the tiniest puppy in the world 😍

I do hope little 'Whiskers' doesn't become traumatised when it gets older and learns to read, and realises that it's has been named after a cat food... 😱

WhatamessIgotinto · 30/08/2020 08:11

OMG she's so cute!

mylittlesandwich · 30/08/2020 08:26

Just found this thread and oh my goodness she's so cute! I have cats so sheer panic would have ensued for me in this situation. She's landed on her wee feet with you.

Elieza · 30/08/2020 08:37

@WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat

She is just looking cuter and cuter! Thank you for the update, I can't wait to see her when her eyes open.

RedLimoncello · 30/08/2020 16:05

When will her little eyes open

RedLimoncello · 01/09/2020 21:47

A little update: Whiskers' eyes are open and she's on solids!

They grow up so fast😭

She's still a tiny really. About the size of a walnut and still so cute.

She'll pop out of her little nesty snug in the corner of her cage whenever we pass by and see if anyone's up for a cuddle. Give our fingers a quick nibble to make sure they aren't undercover bananas and then survey the view for a bit before curling up into a ball with her nose stuck in a finger crease and snooze.

Thanks again for all the advice and affirmation, from "Whisk" (not a cat food) and her humans😁
