No need to shout

Staying with Italian relations. Love them to death, but really they communicate by shouting. I really don't get it. It makes every interaction stressful, they seem angry even when they're not and I can feel dh's blood pressure rising as he speaks. I am from a chatty, quite loud but not shouty family. I find it anxiety inducing and annoying, it being made worse by TV in the background to just add another decibel. Am I a grump?

Yes, I’m afraid you’re being bit unreasonable
They’re not going to change their demeanour or social interaction, it’s how they roll

I get it! DH is Greek and they are all loud and shouty! The last time we went there the television was on and it looked like there was a heated debate on the news but DH said they were talking about the weather!

Our ndns are Portuguese and loud. I have been told this is generally the way with Portuguese people (by a Portuguese friend). They are not just shouters rather than talkers, they are loud when doing everything - closing doors, walking etc. Everything! Last week two of them had an argument, boy was that loud.

If you are staying with relatives is that just for holidays\short term? If so, keep remembering it will come to an end soon, it is not for ever, that might help you get through it.

Ha it's just how we are! My family is so noisy it's ridiculous!! Do you speak Italian? I always think it's sounds much more shouty when you don't understand what's being said..
