Decorating living room ideas please

Our living room is rather dark. It’s about 12 x 18 foot. We have a conservatory off it which restricts the amount of natural light, The conservatory is about the same size and we are likely to get a proper roof put on it. Large Sliding door into the conservatory (18foot wall side).

The sofas are brown leather and I have a couple of nice pieces of wooden furniture which I am happy to add to. I really like the wooden furniture and leather sofas so am reluctant to change them. The fireplace is brick up to the mantel piece which is dark wood - which we also like.

I want to redecorate but am absolutely rubbish and have no vision at all! I like wood, I like Victorian, industrial, my house is 1980s build, I like colour. We have small children with sticky hands but they are good at taking off shoes etc. We aren’t thinking of moving.

I was thinking maybe a dark blue wall where the brick fire place is (on the 12 foot wall) and change the tiles on the hearth and that is where my vision ends! Any ideas anyone?

A dark blue wall would look great with the brown sofa and wood furniture. Find a coffee table and put a multi-colour rug underneath. Get a few cushions for the sofa that incorporate blues and browns. On Pinterest do a search on ‘blue wall brown furniture’ and see what comes up. There are so many possibilities!

Thank you. I’m thinking of embracing the darkness and going for cosy rather than trying to make it light. Maybe some nice textured curtains for the sliding door.

I’ve read that it can work really well to embrace the darkness! Below are a couple of links for plain linen curtains and then ones with a print. Best of luck!

We have a dark blue wall where our fireplace is and I love it. It is Fired Earth carbon blue and I find it very calming. It looks great paired with dark wood, leather and antique gold picture frames.
