I can't believe I missed this classic song in my life....

Listening to Absolutel 80's with my friends at the weekend and a song comes on that everyone starts singing along to including my 20 year old DD. It was the Smiths tune 'There is a light that never goes out' from 1986, that I'd never heard of....one of my fave bands from that era.
How the hell did I miss it in my life? How the hell did my DD know all the words?
I had the piss taken out of me for the whole weekend ...
I'm now wondering what other gems I've not encountered and are gonna randomly turn up on the radio that I've been missing 🤔
Pray tell it's not only me that this has happened to?

I am not a Smith's fan and I even know that song!

Classic

Aw it's a lovely song, though I can't listen to it these days it was played at a dear friend's funeral who very suddenly died aged 35 Sad

WinterAndRoughWeather · 20/08/2020 20:59

That was the song we had played over the signing of our marriage certificate.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 20/08/2020 21:02

I've just listened to it, never heard it before... I was 14 in 1986 but The Smiths and Duran Duran didn't really mix. 😂

LunaNorth · 20/08/2020 21:04

Reminds me of Doris in Gavin and Stacey Grin

Fatted · 20/08/2020 21:09

Is that the one about the double decker bus? If it is I know it!

Rather strangely, there is a Bruce Springsteen song from the 80s that I was convinced I had never heard before in my life. But I knew every single word! On thinking about it, I probably heard a cover version of it, but have no idea who did the cover 🤦‍♀️

LunaNorth · 20/08/2020 21:11

That happened to me, @Fatted!

My one goes, ‘one step up and two steps back’.

DH played it (huge Springsteen fan) and I found myself warbling along. I felt possessed!

ifiwasascent · 20/08/2020 21:14

I only know it because of Gavin and Stacey 😂

CathyorClaire · 20/08/2020 21:28

Never heard of it and I was there.

Maybe I listened to too much New Wave and Two Tone Smile

FabulouslyFab · 20/08/2020 21:46

I’m another that knows it as a Gavin & Stacey song!

PuppyMonkey · 20/08/2020 21:57

Did you not have the albums OP?

Don’t think it was played much on the radio Etc at the time, you had to have the albums.

Queen is Dead??

I was 16 in 1986 and I can’t remember having heard it before either. Not really my taste in music though.

TheVanguardSix · 20/08/2020 23:28

I was 14 and played The Queen is Dead until the vinyl melted. I remember that song so well because my friend's and I were so into The Smiths. I spent the summer in Maine, at my aunt's island hideaway (a little white clapboard cabin surrounded by woods). So whenever that song comes into my head, I always remember that glorious summer.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 20/08/2020 23:29

I was enough of a Smiths fan to have seen them live in 1985, and yes, I know the song very well, but honestly? I don't listen to them any more. I can't enjoy their music now that I know what a massive racist knob Morrissey turned out to be.

Classic**

I haven’t heard that song in years but one of the verses goes “ if a ten tonne truck kills the both of us, such a heavenly way to die...

A wedding song?

DeclutterTheUtility · 20/08/2020 23:33

If a double decker bus , crashes into us..

It's very romantic iirc

DeclutterTheUtility · 20/08/2020 23:35

There's a darkened underpass in there too.

GrimDamnFanjo · 20/08/2020 23:40

I love it !

GlummyMcGlummerson · 20/08/2020 23:43

I think the romantic bit is "To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die". The bus lowers the tone a little let's face it 😂

CornishTiger · 20/08/2020 23:45

Oddly I found that song for the first time the other day too.

HaveYouSeenMyFriendKimberley · 20/08/2020 23:47

The pleasure, the privilege is mine.

FredaFox · 22/08/2020 08:50

Yep she did! Massive smiths fans, the dance floor was full. It was the 90s, I don’t remember if there was a personal reason for it but they are still very happily married
