Trendy dark paint: a cautionary tale.

  1. Be very sure about the colour before you commit.
  1. Paint for the house you actually have and not the house you have in your idle daydreams!

Am currently on coat number FOUR of matt white emulsion trying to cover up F&B Brinjal. Everything hurts and I'm convinced you can still see the darker colour .

It made my loft bedroom feel enclosed and depressing rather than the vintage-y and chic I had pictured. Don't know WHAT I was thinking 🤷🤦.

I love dark paint in rooms you don't use very often! 🤣

Echobelly · 19/08/2020 19:05

LOL! We did a similar colour to that on one wall in our hallway at our last place which worked even though it was mixed in the shop and came out rather darker than we'd expected, but it could have gone horribly wrong - think it helped that it had high ceilings.

Ha, dd2 insisted she wanted four navy blue walls in her bedroom

We managed to talk her down to 2, with 2 cream walls, then she saw some navy and cream wallpaper she liked and went for that instead of paint

Narrow escape!

Have you any photos of it!?

We are having our bedroom painted dark green while we're away atm....Shock

Thecazelets · 19/08/2020 19:09

Oh dear, not what I wanted to hear. We've just bought some trendy dark F&B paint for a small dark sitting room, on the basis that this would be a better idea than trying to lighten it up.

IWouldBeSuperb · 19/08/2020 19:14

Oof, just googled - that was VERY bold!

You'll definitely always know it's there deep down... Grin

Zaphodsotherhead · 19/08/2020 19:20

I think it looks lovely.

Bit like sleeping in an aubergine. but gorgeous on one wall.

QuentinQuarantino · 19/08/2020 19:20

This is the only picture I can find of it before. Put up with it for two years but was never totally sold on it. The F&B paint cost me a fortune as well 😮.

I still adore dark colours but sadly have to accept the limitations of my modest wee mid-terrace house.

does dark paint make it harder to spot spiders?

krustykittens · 19/08/2020 19:26

I am obsessed with F&B's Hague Blue but there isn't a room in our house that would suit having it on all four walls. So I bought one big pot and made a feature wall around our fireplace and have painted the odd bit of furniture to bring it into rooms around the downstairs of our house. The walls are painted in Borrowed Light, so quite natural. I did paint the bathroom walls in Dayroom Yellow with black and white tiles and then painted all the cabinetry in Hague Blue and it looks amazing! I do like Brinjal, what a shame you feel it didn't work.

My friend has just painted all of her ceilings black. I've had to bite my tongue really hard.

user32723 · 19/08/2020 19:33

I have always loved dark paint. I like your before! How long ago did you paint it dark? Are you just fed up of it or did you hate it straight away?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/08/2020 19:33

I think that looks amazing

Q1w2e3 · 19/08/2020 19:34

I painted my room a very similar colour as a slightly goth teen in the 90s. My poor parents have never had the courage to redo it. I can confirm it is much harder to spot spiders!

?!

What colour are the walls?

LumpySpacedPrincess · 19/08/2020 19:36

Was that what it looked like? Looked gorgeous! I'm a year into our navy living room and bloody love it. Feels cosy and calm and makes all the wood pop.

Isolatedizzy · 19/08/2020 19:36

Sorry OP but I think it looks fantastic!

Jamhandprints · 19/08/2020 19:38

Wow, I think it looked lovely...but I'd also be worried about spiders.

Thecazelets · 19/08/2020 19:39

OP I think that looks lovely!

DappledThings · 19/08/2020 19:40

It looks lovely in that picture.

Yes if bloody well does. My son has a dark navy wall. I nearly crapped myself when I realised I was stood beside a mahoosive spider which was right at head height. I was about 5 inches from the horror. I shot out of his room faster than an Olympic sprinter. I still eye that part of his wall with deep suspicion when I am in there.

Oh-ber-gine!
