Smartphone for dummies

I still have an old pay as you go dumbphone, which I've clung to, as I'm so used to texting quickly on it.
I'm not at all tech savvy, but I've finally realised that I'm disadvantaged by not having a smartphone, eg Italian holiday coming up, and I'll have no online access for travel requirements, etc.
How can I go about updating my phone, but keeping it simple?
My PAYG dumbphone is with EE: if I went into an EE shop, would I be able to get something up to date, with the same number?
I know that I sound out of tune with the modern world: just being honest, and hoping for some advice.

Yes EE would be able to transfer your details to your new phone and help you find the most suitable phone model in the shop.
I found them very helpful.
