What do you say to someone who has just been made redundant.

Colleague messaged to tell me. I'm gutted, she's been so kind and we supported each other through the the last round of redundancies.

What do I say? I know there's nothing I can say that will make her feel better. I've already said how sorry I am and that I'm so sad she's going. She was talking to someone else at the time, so I said I can talk later if she wants.

I think for me it was nice just for people to reach out, be positive and wish me luck finding something else. They also offered me a character reference should I ever need one as they enjoyed working with me which was really nice.

The worst for me was the people who said nothing, either through awkwardness or they didn’t know what to say but as long as you reach out that’s the main thing.

Unfotunately nothing really helps, it’s such a knock to your confidence as you feel like the runt of the litter in a way like you aren’t good enough - just having someone to talk to might be a great thing you could help her with!

The kindest thing someone did for me when I was made redundant, was to write me a LinkedIn recommendation. It was 4 years ago now and I'm still so grateful to him.

When I was once at risk of redundancy someone said to me “they can’t take your hands off you” which I found quite reassuring.

When I was made redundant the nicest reactions were the genuine ones. 'Oh shit', 'I am so angry for you' type things.

Commo I hated were the silver lining ones. It was too soon for that crap.

Oh and yes. The two people who just automatically wrote my recommendations. That was kind.
