Anyone else with bizarre neighbours on NextDoor?

I’ve been on the app for a couple of years now and when we lived in North London it was quite interesting to browse. Usually people discussing new local restaurants, things going on in the area or recommending a builder etc.

Now that we’ve moved I’ve joined our new neighbourhood and it’s utterly bizarre. They’re all completely obsessed with cats and helicopters.
It seems every week there’s a post where someone is concerned about a cat that they’ve seen a few times and looks “lost” Hmm Que lots of people offering to take said cat in and then 9 times out of 10 the owners coming on the thread and telling everyone their cat is totally fine and just wanders around like cats do!

Then we have the people who regularly post about spotting helicopters in the local area and does anyone know why?! Confused We’re in London zone 2, near multiple hospitals, there are lots of helicopters!

There has been a lot of interest on mine searching for Giles Coren’s lost cat over the last few months. Now safely back at home

Yes, you do have to identify yourself, and I think each Next Door site must cover quite a wide area, including rural, in spite of the inference that it's just your street! Ours seems to cover our small city and some of the surrounding villages, although you do have the option to narrow it down to messages from your more immediate neighbourhood, I think.

MsEllany · 18/08/2020 18:05

I’m absolutely gutted that both my local Facebook groups and now NextDoor are totally normal.

Suzi888 · 18/08/2020 18:08

Yup, if anyone takes too long to walk by you can guarantee they’ll be intercepted and questioned by our neighbour.

HirplesWithHaggis · 18/08/2020 18:50

Thank you, HunkyPunk. :)

PeachMoon · 18/08/2020 19:08

Ours is all about escaped cows (two different sets it seems) and phishing scams at the minute!

I live in a smallish city so semi-rural areas must be incorporated to an extent I guess

Sounds like mine. Busybodies outraged they saw someone in the Co-op without a mask - 87 posts later they are still moaning. Furious posts about bonfires, firepits, noisy motorbikes, air drones, drug dealers, countless missing cats, ad infinitum.

I needed a gardener - asked on nextdoor, bloke came round for a chat - agreed to start on Monday. Didn't turn up and disappeared off of nextdoor. Asked again woman said yes - 2 of her colleagues came and did a lot of cutting back/clearing - left all the cuttings in 3 huge bags at bottom of my garden, disappeared and not seen or heard from since.

Local Council appear desperate to spend their money on new logos
while the pavements and roads are in a disgusting state. They did a covid questionnaire. After a few days a new post saying they hadn't had many men completing it so would all the ladies please encourage the men to do it! I asked if they seriously thought that women didn't have enough to without chasing after adult men or similar choice words which seemed to kill the thread. Smile

We have lots of MLM and one woman who repeatedly asks if someone could squeeze her dog’s anal glands because the vet is too expensive and she “just can’t” Grin

Bananalanacake · 18/08/2020 21:28

I've never heard of this, sounds a right laugh, do they have it in Germany?

queenrollo · 18/08/2020 21:35

@Bananalanacake a quick google says that it is available in Germany.

Bananalanacake · 19/08/2020 12:59

Oh thanks, will have a look. will also try the area in London where I used to live.

onemouseplace · 19/08/2020 13:07

I think you must be close to me as our is all 'lost' cats and helicopters as well.

At least it's moved on from the pavements being widened and parking spaces being lost as that was ALL our FB group moaned about for a couple of years.

Tenementfunster · 19/08/2020 13:47

Helicopters. Occasional dogging spots, 20 mph limit. People shamed for public urination 😂

Paranoidmarvin · 19/08/2020 13:47

There is a man on our one who believes that Covid was fake and we are all being monitored. That was bad enough. But when we were all told we had to wear masks in shops his head nearly exploded and now every thread he comes on and spouts off. Tbh it getting very annoying.
I have given up telling him to go away now. And I am not looking on it for a while and my blood pressure is thanking me for it

Xigris · 19/08/2020 16:23

@Turnedouttoes Maybe we are! This week the obsession is the sudden use of planters to close residential roads

LadyofTheManners · 19/08/2020 16:30

We currently have arguments over Residents parking permits that everyone voted against 2 years ago.
There is one woman who really doesn't let the Green ward councillor off from his bullshit over it. She got sick of him blaming the local labour council, so managed to track down where he was pushing for it and refused a second consultation on it. You can tell he hates her guts but being polite because he has to. Every time he tries to deny involvement she proves he is lying.
I think because of her and another fella who has joined in this scheme will go within months.

Frownette · 19/08/2020 16:30

Haven't seen anything unusual. One upsetting post about a cat shot, and requests for recommendations for trades people.

We have a helipad near us so I'd be surprised if anyone mentioned choppers.

gggrrrargh · 19/08/2020 16:30

Mine is constantly about phishing scams and confused stories about marks made by burglars.

The ‘burglars are planning to rob you if they leave a chalk mark’ particularly wind me up! Do none of these robbers have nothing more sophisticated to tell each other than chalk, really!

HexyAndIKnowIt · 19/08/2020 17:04

We had one the other week post a CCTV image of a cat in her garden at around 3am and ask if anyone had lost it.
She was serious as well bless her.

Painsnail · 19/08/2020 17:10

You must be near brixton. Its cats and helicopters 24/7 (and usually the same cats)

BlackberrySky · 19/08/2020 17:18

Ours is full of people moaning about roadworks.
