How do you cope with toddler tantrums?

My 18 month old is throwing tantrums a lot, he's generally very whiney all morning but always seems happier in the afternoon after his nap.

How do you deal with a tantrum? It's happening for every reason, getting dressed, brushing hair, leaving the house, absolutely everything. I've tried to talk calmly to him but it's pointless as he can't hear me over his own screaming.

Put into words / repeat back to them what they want or why they're upset. Even if it seems a silly thing to you. Makes the child feel validated and seen, so more likely to stop the tantrum than of you fight it or try to explain it out of them.
