Prams for newborns

Hi everyone,

I am 25 week pregnant and looking around for a pram for my baby. There are so many options!! I Live in zone 2 London (Battersea) so i need a city pram. My partner and I live in a 2 bed flat and even though it’s not small it’s not massive either so space is a factor which I need to take into consideration. I saw that silvercross make a pram called Persuit which is sold in John Lewis. It’s suitable from birth and the babynest allows baby to be in a lie flat position and be very snug. However, I’m wondering whether this is a suitable options instead of also getting the carrycot. Apparently you do not need the carrycot with this model. I’m also going to buy the ergobaby baby carrier Which I will hopefully also use a lot. Space wise I could do without having a bulky carrycot around the flat and also this pramette looks easy and smaller to steer around London. But ultimately I want my baby to be comfortable. Has anyone used the silvercross Persuit ? If so I’d love some feedback. Thank you :)

Hi I had a silver cross with my first and I loved it. I didn't really look around as i was nearly 33 weeks and that was the only one they could get on time for babies arrival. This time I went and tried a million. I love walking so it had to be durable. Currently put a deposit down for the new Venchi pram which is super easy to fold away. My advice is try you independent baby shops as John Lewis push silver cross and bugaboo but there are loads of prams that don't have a massive price tag. I would also order one soon as we went get ours til Dec and baby is due in Jan, the girl said because of Covid a lot of things are behind. Good luck I'm sure you'll find your perfect one x

Look second hand. There is a massive second hand pram market, esp on Facebook. You could get a pram to suit for the first 6 months then sell and get something different for once they are sitting, rather than a pram for all ages.

I was in Brixton with DS and I got a bugaboo bee with a cocoon. Very great, folds up small for the flat, light enough to carry up the tube steps by myself (with baby and bag.) I got mine (£900 new) for £250 on a second hand mums group.

If space was a big issue I'd consider using a sling/carrier and then just get a pushchair for when they're older. I used the pram only a handful of times, could have easily just used the carrier. From memory he was in a pushchair with an insert from about 4 months old.

You don’t need a carrycot, just a pram that lies flat.
The silver cross pursuit is 11kg empty. To me that’s far too heavy for getting around London. I have a mountain buggy which is designed for off road and it’s only 9kg

Bare in mind you will have the weight of pram plus baby to carry down tubes steps, fold to use on buses if full etc.. I would be aiming for something that’s suitable lie flat from birth, and weighs between 6-9kg maximum.

The ergo will be great out and about, but I find pram handy

Bugaboo bee - suits all your requirements without being flimsy

For buses, tubes and trains I found using a sling than a baby carrier easier.

With buses this allowed me to always get on and get a seat. There as other parents couldn't fit as there were too many buggies and in some cases they had to get off the bus for wheelchair users.

Mamas and papas have just released a new one called something like strata. It's a city pram so probably worth a look

I wouldn’t go for that pram as it weighs a lot. If you have to lift in and out of the car.

Are you ground floor or top floor? If you have to lift to second floor no way - that weighs nearly same as a double pram.

Although if no lifting is involved with car or stairs it’s a lovely pram !

What about city mini ? Folds very small (can carry a baby and a pram same time)
Or yo-yo

I had mountain buggy heavy but brilliant - - best pram ever - shopping around north coat road 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Also think if you are having another baby ? Think about turning it into a double

My son and his wife have a newborn and they chose a Joie pram/buggy thing. They live on the top floor of a house and have to leave the baby transporter downstairs in the entrance hall. They also wanted one that would travel well and this Joie model folds down very small very easily, so it fits easily in the boot of a small car and it tucks away nicely into a little corner in the entrance hall. I don’t know which model it is, but he did tell me that they paid £204 for it. We met our grandchild for the first time last week and were able to road test the buggy and, from my inexpert viewpoint, it seems perfectly up to the job.

Another vote for the Bugaboo Bee. Leanne’s Prams on Facebook sells them much cheaper and gives warranty and will ship

We had a city mini jogger which was fab - light, folds up small, easy to fold one handed, suitable from birth to about 4. Also was less than £350 for a double.

I think newer ones have a clip for a carry cot if you absolutely must have one.

Babyjogger city mini or bugaboo bee are the best city prams IMHO.

Mine grew out of carrycot by 4 months (long babies!)

We’re moving to Battersea from a big city in the US and plan to re-use our YoYo for the second. It’s a great city stroller. My first was very comfortable in it even as a newborn, much more so than our big pram with a proper carrycot which she hated. It’s also so convenient for public transport and if you happen have stairs to your flat- we lived in a 3rd floor walk up until DD was almost 2 and it made life so much easier. The bugaboo bee is also another good option to consider. No idea on the silver cross but don’t get anything heavy.

Hi shytown! For some reason my friend who’s a midwife mentioned she loves the yo-yos but they’re not for everyday use (?). This is my first baby so I’m pretty clueless...I just don’t want a massive bulky carrycot. Thinking the bugaboo bee or bugaboo cam3 now!

I've got the uppababy. Had one with my dd years ago and it was amazing so gone for the same.

How bizarre @ClaireCanale123 never heard that before and I know loads of people with them, including an OBGYN consultant and I’d hope she’s fairly clued up on baby care haha! And my old boss at work had one and his wife is a paediatrician... not sure if they used it daily though because that’s not the kind of thing you ask your boss! They’re sold as suitable for airline carry-on so maybe there’s a misconception that it’s purely a travel stroller?? I also wheeled DD1 out of the hospital in hers when she was born as we got a taxi home and no one said anything.

@shytown it’s actually great to know that they’re good for everyday use from birth! because I really like the look of them ! They seem pretty great. So did you use yours as your main pram from birth? Are they Ok in the winter etc...? I know silly question but like I said I’m clueless 😂

Yes used ours as our main pram from birth. We do also have a big stroller, because we get some serious winters here, but I hate it compared to how light and easy to push the YoYo is so it hardly gets any use. Which brings me into winter use... a bit of slush or ice like you typically get in London won’t be a problem at all. If you live somewhere where you’re likely to get 6 inches of snow and you’re crazy enough to want to walk through that, then it’s not the pram for you because I’ve tried and it’s bloody useless!

Oh got it!! In London we don’t even get such bad winters and I doubt I will venture very far with our pram in bad weather. We live in Battersea Rise close to the common so I reckon frequent walks will be around the common and Battersea Park( which is hardly the jungle 😂). We drive so we don’t really get busses or trains But if I did I would probably put baby in her Ergobaby carrier. I really like the idea of this pram and I’m torn between that one and the bugaboo Cam 3 which is slightly bigger

And the bugaboobee5 is another great option. In fact I think it’s either going to be the yoyo or the bugaboo bee 5. I really want something light and easy to go around with.

I wish I had got a yo yo. My Pram was a city mini GT. it was a nightmare for the bus as it just too big and bulky even when folded.
