How do you control your 10 year olds internet access?

We're thinking we need to let DS have some internet access. At the moment he has an old iPad which he plays on when it's in airplane mode.

How did you go about relaxing internet usage as they grow up?
Thinks like Wikipedia, YouTube - did you allow YouTube kids or did you allow certain videos through the allowed website settings?
When did you let them have friends on games like minecraft?

my DSs devices have internet access but Microsoft Family on the windows device and Google Family on the Android device limit the sites he can visit to sites I have looked at and approve of - mostly restricted to educational and factual sites with a few fun things thrown in. fairly easy to set up but obviously its some work to find and approve appropriate sites.
