Broken fridge

Eurgh.

Went to make supper and could feel that the items in the fridge weren’t cool. Assumed the door had been left ajar so just shut it and carried on.

I mentioned it to partner, he went and had a look and it’s broken. /:

It’s only a few years old (bought brand new in 2014) and now all I keep thinking about is how all the food is going to need binning.

Ptft. /:

Is it actually broken though? Mine stopped working and it was down to a blocked drain in the back. A pipe cleaner and a few jugs of hot soapy water cleared it in no time. Just remember to put a bucket under the drainage tube exit at the back.

@HouchinBawbags I don’t even know how to do that?

It’s not an American fridge freezer. Just a boring fridge master one. I don’t even know if it has a pipe. /:

Freezer is working fine, it seems the fridge has decided to pack in. /:

There's usually a tiny drain hole in the back (as you look inside the open fridge)
See if it's clear. Ours packed in when it had blocked up with crap and gross gloop. Yuck.

HouchinBawbags · 17/08/2020 15:54

This bit in the back. It either stops the fridge working altogether (as ours did) or floods the bottom of the fridge with water.

as @HouchinBawbags said....mine particularly likes to flood the giant wasted space under the veg drawer, and then when the temperature goes rogue it converts the fridge paddling pool into a giant iceberg that has to be chiselled out.

Trashtara · 17/08/2020 16:16

yes, all fridgesd pretty much have a drain. It goes in to a small tray at the bottom of the fridge. It is usually such small amounts that it evaporates from the heat of the fridge that it doesn't cause issue but if it's either blocked, or there has been a fair amount of water it may have flooded.

Bodgedboxdye · 17/08/2020 16:59

@HouchinBawbags it doesn’t have one of those. /:

Are you absolutely sure? As far as I know it's a vital part of fridges as they naturally produce condensation as they work and have to drain water, usually into a drip tray behind it by the heat of the motor where it then evaporates.

Anyway, I'd recommend getting on FB and asking your local pages who repairs fridges. Often you'll find someone to have a look for pretty cheap. A repair is often a better option than replacing.

Bodgedboxdye · 18/08/2020 10:31

We’ve bought a new one.

Whilst making tea, I had a suspicion that the freezer was going too, partner had a look and he confirmed it. /:

I thought fridges lasted ages?!

I did call up about a repair, it was £90 call out fee and then whatever needed replacing. Thought it better to just get a new one.

Defo something you don’t want to happen though. we’re going away on Monday, and the fridge breaking was an added expense. But it’s bought now and should hopefully last a while. 😶

Hope you like your new one. I agree that it seems too early to be failing. I know it's been 6 years but for a fridge that doesn't feel long at all to me. My current one has done nearly 5 years with us and before that was a good 8 or more years with its previous owner (a bin collection day council sticker was on it that had the year on so the fridge was at least that old)
Admittedly mine's getting a bit.... iffy now. Sometimes the milk goes off a bit quickly so perhaps it's shutting off for a while. Enjoy your new fridge freezer.

@HouchinBawbags thank you. I’ve been after 1 with a water dispenser and it’s the one we’ve gone for. Yay. (:

It’s so hard to shop when you’re lacking in a fridge. It’s crazy how much we take them for granted. 😏

Yup, 100% agree. I thought it’d be the last thing I’d have to replace.
