Has your weekly food shop increased since Covid?

I’d say ours has gone up by at least 25% despite shopping more carefully.

It’s now at the point we’re having to change what we are eating to stop it going up even further.

It’s not just me is it?

The cost I mean. Sorry.

Same here, no good deals anymore Angry

vanillandhoney · 16/08/2020 19:45

Yes, but we're overall we're saving money as we're not going out as much.

SerenaSandwich · 16/08/2020 19:45

Yes, but only because we buy so much more as we are all at home most of the time.

LuluJo1020 · 16/08/2020 19:45

Massively! I keep telling myself it's evened out because I'm not popping into shops just to pick up the odd drink or loaf of bread now. I'm actually making do with what we've got until it's time for the next big shop. I'm just not looking at the numbers too closely to see if that's true or not!

ReySky · 16/08/2020 19:46

I've noticed this too. Lots of sneaky price hikes, and also less promotional offers etc too where I'd usually stock up on things, as well as own brand things being replaced with expensive brand name versions. Food shopping is starting to cost a small fortune Sad

JorisBonson · 16/08/2020 19:47

Yes! We were just saying this the other day. I think our Lidl trolley has doubled in price.

LBOCS2 · 16/08/2020 19:48

Ours has literally doubled.

We've gone from feeding two adults an evening meal five nights a week then 5 of us B/L/D for two days, to feeding five of us three meals a day plus snacks. I actually feel pretty good that it's only double what it was!

Babababababybelll · 16/08/2020 19:51

Yep ! Prices going up , not getting meals at work kids snaking constantly

CrunchyNutNC · 16/08/2020 19:51

The weekly food shop has increased (more reliant on Tesco deliveries, so no Lidl or even just Tesco reduced shelf) but we eat out much less so overall I think the families food is costing about the same, or a bit less.

The drinks bill however..... Grin

MrsKeats · 16/08/2020 19:53

Yep. Waitrose is considering just giving us a small store to save time.

OhTheRoses · 16/08/2020 19:57

Yes. I buy the food and it has gone up by about 60% pw. However DC are 22 and 25 and have been in mostly. DD home from uni, DH, DS and I working from home. Three meals a day and beer and wine for four grown ups. OTH as a family overall no fares, no coffees out, no lunches out and no meals out. They have all saved.

It will be hard for us to tell in the round because both DC will be away from late Sept/early Oct.

FizzyPink · 16/08/2020 19:59

Yes massively but I think it might also be because we’ve been having friends over more whereas before we’d go out.

I did feel slightly outraged at spending £30 on a bottle of prosecco in the pub after months of buying them for £10 in the supermarket

Babyroobs · 16/08/2020 20:00

Yes as the kids have been home all day for months but we have saved on dinner money, eating out etc.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/08/2020 20:04

Ours has gone up substantially - but we have ds3 home from uni, and dh is working from home. Before lockdown, it was just me and dh, and he was away for work 2 or 3 nights a week, and was often away all day for work another day, and eating on expenses, so we were having 11 main meals a week, and 8-9 lunches.

Now we are catering for 21 lunches and 21 main meals, and 16 breakfasts (I rarely eat breakfast), and ds3’s ‘raid-the-fridge’ snacks, so I’m not surprised it is costing as much as it does.

purpledagger · 16/08/2020 20:10

We have noticed that prices in supermarkets crept up before coronavirus. We do spend more on food, but that's been due to lockdown and being at home. It's still cheaper than paying for childcare and the odd work lunch though.

mrsm43s · 16/08/2020 20:11

Our weekly shop for a family of 2 adults, 2 teens has gone from approx £65 to £85. Obviously, we're all at home more often, but equally, we're cooking better quality meals, and more from scratch, as we have so much more time without the commutes.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 16/08/2020 20:19

I used to shop around, get bits in different places depending on what was on offer. Now it’s one shop and there are fewer offers.

user1487194234 · 16/08/2020 20:22

Supermarket shop has increased massively but we are saving money overall as we normally all buy lunch and eat out at least 3 x a week
And there has been a bit of 'fuck it' when nothing is much fun a few ( lot ) of treats helps !
Starting to eat out again now

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 16/08/2020 20:23

Yes! Partly due to less offers, partly due to DS1 living at home again and of course the DC are here all day so want to snack all the time.

I've been very grateful for the fsm vouchers we've recieved.

Whatevesok · 16/08/2020 20:24

Yes. Less deals and we're buying more as neither of us are going out to work or eating out. So basically 3 meals a day plus snacks for 5 days a week and then maybe a takeaway once or twice a week. Where as before we were buying food for less meals at home. Probably spending less overall though wehn I account for what we would spend eating out and meals on the go.

Definitely notice the lack of offers! Ust be hard for those on a tight budget with kids as I notice it on crisps and snacks especially.

RaeCJ82 · 16/08/2020 20:29

Yes, it's gone from between £80-£90 a week to between £110-£120. We are a family of three. We're home all the time so obviously need more of the basics (milk, bread, toilet roll etc). Plus our DD hasn't been in nursery and is an absolute snack monster. Food has been something I've looked forward to and we've been doing Hello Fresh or Gousto most weeks. Plus the alcohol increase.🙈

It did but I have managed to rein it in again. I think I was buying extra supplies every time, now I am just buying what we need for the week & when it's gone, it's gone. I have also discovered that my Aldi reduces fresh food by 30% first thing in the morning, which helps! Was spending around £60 per week for a family of 5, now around £40, same as pre-Covid.
