Has your weekly food shop increased since Covid?

I’d say ours has gone up by at least 25% despite shopping more carefully.

It’s now at the point we’re having to change what we are eating to stop it going up even further.

It’s not just me is it?

No, I don’t really think it’s gone up overall. When dc are home (currently all in nursery or holiday club during the week), it’s a bit more as I’m buying them lunches (but have to send a packed lunch for holiday club anyway).

I would say the actual cost hasn’t really gone up. I think actually it may have gone down overall as we’re shopping once a week now instead of twice a week. I spend a lot less on food for work though. Even though I nearly always packed most of my food for work, I was still out of the house 12+ hour days 3 days a week (so that’s a lot of meals to make and pack up, so sometimes I bought lunch/dinner/snack/coffee out instead of taking a cool bag with 3 meals a day in it).

We are definitely spending more on alcohol but cutting costs elsewhere.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 16/08/2020 20:48

The “big weekly shop” online has gone up by around 20-25%, but the weekly outgoings on food have reduced overall as I’ve been WFH so no buying lunch in town or popping out to the shops whenever I fancy something different or realise I’ve run out of something. Definitely far fewer BOGOFs and 3-for-2 deals around though.

FelicityBob · 16/08/2020 20:48

Yes but I put it down to all the extra beer and biscuits

EnoughAlready2020 · 16/08/2020 20:56

More than doubled but all of us are home now. I don't feel richer even though I'm not spending much on petrol, kids lunch etc..

TheSunIsStillShining · 16/08/2020 21:05

And there's another thread on how kids have gained weight. :) I wonder if there's a correlation between the two.... hmmm...
On a more serious note: prices have been hiked up a bit. We keep track of some specific items and they have all gone up 10-30%.

Bloodybridget · 16/08/2020 21:12

Yes, only two of us and we're spending a fortune. It's not as though we used to eat out much pre Covid, either, I can't understand it. Can't just be my wine habit, can it??

Bluewavescrashing · 16/08/2020 21:16

Yes. I'm buying more tinned and jar foods, pasta etc as I'm worried about availability this winter. Brexit, covid lockdowns etc.

RedCatBlueCat · 16/08/2020 21:20

Yes, but I'm producing 15 or more extra meals a week, and not doing a £20 top up "loaf of bread".
So the headline amount is eyewatering, but not as bad as it first feels.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 16/08/2020 21:38

Think we are breaking even roughly. Spending more on deliveries but not having to top up lunch accounts and no monthly takeaway now.

Heating will go up though as we are home more. Hate being cold so would rather economise elsewhere if needed.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 16/08/2020 21:43

Yep, not buying anything different, infact less as not needing nappies now DD is potty trained and its gone from £80 a week to £125

IwishIwasyoda · 16/08/2020 21:48

yep. Food prices through the roof at the moment. No real deals on stuff like household essentials either. Can't remember last time I saw a good deal on dishwasher tablets

AriettyHomily · 16/08/2020 21:53

Absolutely. But we are now paying for three meals a day for four people seven days a week in one hit whereas before we weren't.

BillyAndTheSillies · 16/08/2020 22:10

Yup. Ours went up by nearly 50%. Used to be £70 a week for myself and DH plus a few snacks for DC but during lockdown went up to £130. Mainly because we started weaning DS2 during lockdown and went from only needing dinners for myself and DH because DS1 either ate at nursery or his GP's through the week to needing three square meals a day for all four of us plus endless snacks.

Trashtara · 16/08/2020 22:17

Yes. But our takeaway bill, coffee bill and nip to the shop at lunch bills have all gone down so overall we're saving money.

BreconBeBuggered · 16/08/2020 22:34

Yup. Generally nobody in my household eats food made outside the home in the normal run of things, so not saving on eating out or in a canteen. On average my food bill is around 30% higher than it used to be.

HandsOffMyRights · 16/08/2020 22:42

Agreed.
I never bought coffee and I always made sandwiches, so no savings either.

Dreading winter fuel bills if we're still.at home.

Nsky · 16/08/2020 23:18

Just downloaded lidl app, bit basic for now, I expect will follow suit, gives a few coupons.
One now £5 off £25 shop

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 16/08/2020 23:24

Household overall weekly budget for food wine and drinks bill down in total because restaurant dining out is now minimal although shop brought expenditure considerably more perhaps double pre Covid.

BackforGood · 16/08/2020 23:26

Hugely. Because before the pandemic I wasn't feeding 5 adult x 3 meals a day, plus beers / wine and treats.

At it's worst, mine was two and a half times 'the norm'.

Runnerduck34 · 16/08/2020 23:28

Yes ours has gone up, almost feels like a xmas shop every week😮
We always provided 3 meals a day/ 7 days a week, rarely ate out got takeaways etc but its still gone up by 25-30%

Bwlch · 16/08/2020 23:40

No noticeable difference. We aren't eating any more or differently than before Covid.

Dreading winter fuel bills if we're still.at home.

I think this will hit a lot of people.

gamerchick · 16/08/2020 23:42

Yes and there is no but. Food is going up in price and there's no denying it.

imissthesouth · 16/08/2020 23:43

Yes, although i'm actually spending less as I'm working from home and no longer buying my lunch, i think i save around £100 pm

Deianira · 16/08/2020 23:44

There is no one additional living with me, and my shopping habits haven't changed, but yes, the prices are up 25/30% for a regular shop.
