Has your weekly food shop increased since Covid?

I’d say ours has gone up by at least 25% despite shopping more carefully.

It’s now at the point we’re having to change what we are eating to stop it going up even further.

It’s not just me is it?

Oh yes. 50%

I buy same items and don't think prices have gone up on everything. I did notice chicken had gone up but I generally eat mostly vegetables rice and salad and prices same. No alcohol or cakes or biscuits etc.

Glamazoni · 16/08/2020 23:53

Mine has gone up by 20% because I’m forced to shop at stores that can deliver instead of shopping at Aldi. And it’s gone up another 20% due to price increases and the removal of multi buy offers.

Ours has gone down considerably, I used to go every day because I don't like meal planning and instead decide each day what I fancy, I always ended up coming home with a few extra bits that had caught my eye.

In the beginning the queues put me off going daily so I saved a little however I still bought a few extra things once I was inside. Now I have to wear a mask I go as infrequently as possible and never browse.

Yes we were £90 at Aldi/££110 Tesco now £180 Tesco WTAF? Eat the same.

starfishmummy · 17/08/2020 00:14

Yes. With DS and DH at home all the time we need more food in the house. Spending more in local butchers and with veg box company. However this is offset by DH not needing to spend a huge amount on a season ticket.

Dreading winter fuel bills if we're still.at home.

I agree this will hit a lot of people, but, OTOH, the last time I put any petrol in my car was 18th March, so it's swings and roundabouts.

Newbracelet · 17/08/2020 00:21

Yes definitely. Very little change from £100 a week and it used to be nearer £60. Less treats and snack foods lately too. Ditto alcohol.

Newbracelet · 17/08/2020 00:24

I needed to heat the house for the first time last winter as a DC was at home. It wasn't as bad as I expected because I reprogrammed the thermostat to be 2 degrees lower than usual. It meant wearing an extra jumper or cardigan but combined with a change of supplier I managed to reduce the monthly DD by about £25.

Some weeks our shop is double what it used to be. I think it's a combination of:

  • Fewer offers and deals
  • We're eating at home more rather than taking sandwiches to work, which means we use tins of soup etc. And we snack more.
  • In the early days of lockdown, we bought rather a lot of treats and special food. When we couldn't go out or go shopping for other things, it was one pleasure we still had. The habit has been hard to break.
  • Going shopping in person more often as online slots are harder to find, which means you see more of what's available.
  • Possibly higher prices for some things.
Aridane · 17/08/2020 05:07

Yes, massively - before just got a few bits and pieces for one daily meal. Now food for 3+ meals a day. Plus now get through toilet paperback lot more as previously all that done at work!

Squiffany · 17/08/2020 06:11

We’re not feeding anyone extra and we both work for the nhs so still taking packed lunches. Stopped buying our weekly bottle of wine at £8 and snack type stuff and the bill is still rising. I refuse to buy inferior coffee though.

Lot less basic ranges has impacted on us too.

linmanuel · 17/08/2020 09:33

Yes agree with others
We have not been out much really since lockdown ended
Petrol is less but everything else seems more
We did do a big shop at Costco which will last us ages, we are 6 of us at home so it's often worth it
But like others I don't feel richer
