Omg curtains are so expensive!

I have a bay window that’s slightly longer and slightly wider than standard. I’m going to have to spend absolutely hundreds (could easily spend 1k+) on curtains.

I’ve lived with the blinds that were left by previous owners and really don’t like the look of them, they change the way hope feel of the room. I’ve waited until I (thought) I had saved enough but now I’m ready to go ahead the reality of spending so much solely on curtains is making me feel a bit sick!

I miss the long Ikea curtains. Curse the person who changed them to a 250cm drop!

Sorry, the previous link was to the wallpaper. Here's the fabric we have:

I have STUPIDLY big windows. My living room curtains took over 30 metres of fabric.

Depending where you are in the country there are amazing places that make curtains for a decent price.

My living room curtains cost about £500 fully made and lined with blackout material.

@Sexnotgender

(Excellent user name!)

Could you possibly let me know where you got them made?

Can’t see if anyone else had recommended them but we use curtains 2 go for made to measure. Lots of free samples available too

Sexnotgender · 17/08/2020 15:44

Thanks @MrsKypp it was a place called Rejects in Kirkcaldy. They made all our curtains. Definitely paid less than £2k for 6 pairs of massive curtains.

Feelingpoorlysick · 17/08/2020 15:52

Not sure what type you are looking for but La redoute do longer length curtains which worked out cheaper for us.

Apolloanddaphne · 17/08/2020 17:12

@Sexnotgender I LOVE Rejects. I was there just on Thursday buying fabric to make face masks.

This is a long shot but if you weregoing to France Leroy Merlin, the big French DIY outlet do very long curtains, ready made. The drop is up to 350cm

I know France is somewhat off the cards atm but if you were willing to wait a while or if you know someone there. I wonder if they might deliver to UK??

Would shutters be much more?.

EKGEMS · 17/08/2020 17:23

We built a house last year and the custom mini blinds purchased from our builder was $3,000 but far less than an outside contractor! We don't even have curtains the blinds are so nice looking but you've got to wonder why

30 metres! Shock

I'm imagining your curtains wouldn't be far off size of theatre curtains!

midsomermurderess · 17/08/2020 17:32

I've got a big bay window and very high ceilings. I got a track installed by John Lewis, which was pricey, and bought 2 sets of curtains, so there is enough fabric for them to drape well when closed. They don't come near being floor length but my sofa is in front (although there is a 1.5m space) of the window. Full length, lined, good quality curtains would ruin me.

TwigTheWonderKid · 17/08/2020 17:39

Loom & Last do 278cm drop and extra wide and are pretty reasonaable.

TimeTruthandHearts · 17/08/2020 17:42

Yup.

When we bought this house, I snootily wondered why the previous owners had opted for office style vertical blinds throughout.

Until I measured up and priced new blinds and curtains.

I still couldn't live with the office blinds, but we'll be decorating around the curtains for as long as we're living here!

bunters · 17/08/2020 18:43

Haha, we're in the same boat. Looking at 400 for a fairly modest window (and we need the entire house done 😱 )

wantmorenow · 17/08/2020 18:58

I may have imagined it, but I think there's. A shop in Bath that sells posh second hand curtains. Found it

they may have something

Sexnotgender · 17/08/2020 19:03

It’s the fabric that is so expensive. My bedroom curtains are made to measure by John Lewis and were about £250 from memory and are over 3 metres each way. Keep an eye on their fabric sales.

Sgtmajormummy · 21/08/2020 15:10

I’m looking at fabric from the British company iLiv. This shop/site is cheaper than the one above, gives free poly cotton lining or lining material over 10 yards and also sells ends of rolls (same fabric) for £11 a yard for all those DIY projects!

Wait 'til you see the bill for dry cleaning curtains . I would look at other options.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/08/2020 21:55

Dunelm do made to measure. Always good.
