Enlarged vein under tongue... should I worry?

JellyTots2009 · 16/08/2020 08:31

I'm getting worried about a swelling under my tongue. Only one side of the tongue is looking lumpy and swollen and the vein in particular looks affected. There is no pain.

I'll attach a picture to see if any dentists/doctors know what this could be?

I'll be trying to see my doctor Monday or at least talk on the phone but can anybody put my mind at rest before this please?

I don't smoke and I'm early 30's if that's relevant. Thanks

I’m not a doctor but I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Looks like a healthy mouth/tongue to me

That's normal. Are you anxious about other things?

It looks like a mucocele, where theres a wee blockage in one of your saliva tubes, the saliva backs up and causes a bulge, I had one for years, my dentist always explained it to me forgetting he had told me last time! Mine just disappeared one day.

I am an anxious person the first thing I asked my OH is 'do you think it's cancer?'

But because I can see a difference from the other side I think it's something abnormal. Thank you for replies. I will still consult doctor to put my mind at ease

Just an update...
I did phone my doctors and was sent a form to fill and added photos as the lump is still there a week later.
The doctor replied that it is a cyst and I have been referred.
Does anyone think this looks like a cyst? I'm not sure. I would hate to go to hospital (if that's what a referral is) and waste time if it is in fact not a cyst.
I don't even know if I can visit the doctor to see them so they can see it properly. I am starting to feel it now when I eat something , it's not so bad if I'm just drinking.

If anything it's a blocked salivary gland like a pp said, which is nothing to worry about. Do you have a dentist? They would be the best person to check it for you

JellyTots2009 · 26/08/2020 22:22

I do have a dentist who I haven't seen since October, I was meant to see in March for a 6 month check up but coronavirus hit and I've had no appointments since.
I will try and get in touch with them to see if they can see me, thanks

I know this thread is pretty old so not expecting a reply. I am just wondering if you ended up seeing a dentist or another specialist who told you what this was? This looks exactly like my tongue and I am also an anxious person who's first thought is always cancer. So fun to be this way 😐

Hi

Did you end up finding out what this was @JellyTots2009? Please let us know- I know it's been a while but hoping you'd respond.

Thanks!

JellyTots2009 · 20/07/2021 18:22

Hi I have had no further update regarding the bulge. It felt like it went away for a while but lately I can feel it again when I eat.

A referral never came through so I haven't seen anybody about this. Not sure if I was forgotten about or whether this is a huge backlog and I'm stuck somewhere on the list ...

Thank you @JellyTots2009!

To anyone on here looking for answers with this issue who may be freaking out, my tongue looked almost exactly like this. I couldn't, however feel anything there when I ate or anything. I had an oral surgeon tell me that it was perfectly normal. He almost giggled and told me he couldn't believe I even noticed it. I guess the veins under there aren't necessarily identical on both sides. You always hear that assymetry=cancer or an issue but out bodies can vary so much from one side to the other. That being said, it's always a good idea to get anything looked at that you're concerned about. Just remember, more often than not it's nothing serious.
