Anyone else hear ‘the hum’?

I didn’t realise this was a thing but apparently around 2% of the population can hear a low background humming noise. I am one of them. It’s like a car idling in the background. It’s driving me mad!

I have a high pitched noise constantly in my ears. Is that tinnitus?

Guiltypleasures001 · 17/08/2020 00:25

Hi op

I used to live on the outskirts of Hertford, and heard the hum at night all the time, it sounded electrical to me like Pylons but we weren't near any

Icanflyhigh · 17/08/2020 00:33

Yes! Never realised it was a thing, thought it was just me.

DarkHelmet · 17/08/2020 00:47

Very low pitched hum, definitely coming from outside, and only at night. Glad it's not just me.

GellerYeller · 17/08/2020 00:53

@ThewaytoSanJose it's unlikely to be a sonic boom. They're rare and you'd know if you heard one, a very sudden and VERY loud bang like an explosion. We had one and it sounded like a truck had hit the house. Carried across several cities and I've heard they can take windows out.

Hyperfish101 · 17/08/2020 07:39

It was windy last night so I didn’t hear it.

Sonic boom?

A sonic boom is a sharp bang. The hum noise is a low continuous drone. Like others, my husband has described it a like an engine running in the distance.

We moved to a village in a rural setting recently and can hear it some nights. I know it's not tinnitus because my husband can hear it too on the same nights. I didn't hear it in the city when we lived there but it was really loud there in other ways.

SlantyBaws · 25/08/2020 12:11

I hear it too and it's well documented in my neck of the woods. I hear it louder at night when the windows are closed strangely enough, so it is better in the summer. It sounds to me like an HGV idling. Sometimes it feels like my eardrum is vibrating, which is quite disconcerting. I tend to use an audiobook and earbuds to get to sleep when it is particularly bad.

Oh and I suffer from tinnitus too but it's definitely not that.

My DB hears it, but I’ve never been able to.

Yeah, from my neighbour's hot tub. The council are currently monitoring and have deemed it excessive, so we're awaiting the next step.
