If you could would you go back to the 90’s?

The more I think about it the more I would love to go back to that time. I was too young to appreciate it fully (born 83).

I think it was a great time to be a kid and I’d imagine it would have been great to be an adult too. I really hate the world my children are growing up in Sad

Although actually, isn't that the whole point of terrorism I suppose. To terrify people. You don't even need to actually harm people to cause chaos you just need to make sure that people know that you could harm them if you chose to

wombledown · 16/08/2020 00:05

@isabellerossignol personally I think there was & still is a load of ignorance around the Troubles. As an Irish person in London who had family in Belfast & Dublin I would see incidences reported in all different ways. By far most of the deaths & destruction occurred in NI & by different sides but people in England often forget that & think the only terrorists were the IRA.

DateLoaf · 16/08/2020 00:07

Yup I will hop in to that time machine too please Smile

wombledown · 16/08/2020 00:15

Prime example is @wheresmymojo listing the bad things of the decade & putting the "IRA bombings". That's pretty English centric when 125 people in England died out of 3.5k & of course republican groups were responsible for the majority of the deaths but loyalists still killed more than 1k. Obviously 1 death by terrorism is 1 too many but the below from Wiki shows the difference in scale.

"In The Politics of Antagonism: Understanding Northern Ireland, Brendan O'Leary and John McGarry point out that "nearly two per cent of the population of Northern Ireland have been killed or injured through political violence [...] If the equivalent ratio of victims to population had been produced in Great Britain in the same period some 100,000 people would have died,"

Tbf that's because of the role the English played in the war in NI - it affected the reporting and also which group targeted England.

There were a few shockers - the wood green one always seemed nasty because it was a shopping centre - but the big ticket city ones happened outside of city working hours. I actually remember the St Mary's axe one - saw a non marked van with a siren and lights driven by a couple of guys in fatigues race off down the strand just before it went off. I only found out recently that the IRA told security services the wrong location - guess those guys were getting some other info in as the others would have already been there clearing streets where they thought it was going to be.

There were loads of scare provoked evacuations though - like you say, @isabellerossignol they were certainly successful in disrupting from that pov.

WoahBodyforrrm · 16/08/2020 00:17

Hell yes!! I'd go back and change so much. I was only a kid but remember it fondly.

@bananabread are you me? They were my 3 favourite shows. I think being Bernard or Harmony would be very useful right now!

wombledown · 16/08/2020 00:21

I would love Bernards watch, someone make one!

I agree but that poster listed global issues eg Rwandan genocide, Egypt attacks so from that perspective IRA bombings with many casualties looks a bit odd if that makes sense.

I want Greenclaws's tree but that's more the 80sGrin
TheKarenWhoKnocks · 16/08/2020 00:30

Yes, absolutely makes sense. I was replying to that poster, I just took too long to write. I do agree with you.

Although, on Rwanda, we probably heard more about what was happening there than what was happening in Belfast, in England in the 90s. Which in itself is pretty disturbing.

Selmaselma · 16/08/2020 00:35

I'd go back and do something about climate change back then Sad

Shmithecat2 · 16/08/2020 00:42

Fuck yes. Age 15-25. I'd make so many different choices! I did have a good time though.

wombledown · 16/08/2020 00:48

Was that that green monster that planted a seed & a tree with what you wanted would grow?

wombledown · 16/08/2020 00:49

@TheKarenWhoKnocks nice username! 😆

DeltaAlphaDelta · 16/08/2020 00:53

I was a teen in the 90s, became responsible (ish) at the turn of the millennium. I'd give anything to go back to those carefree days. Secondary school, then first job (which I loved), living at home and spending all my money on socialising and enjoying myself. Best decade ever!

Grandmi · 16/08/2020 00:56

Yes I was born in 1963 so I was 27 ...it was a fun ,uncomplicated decade! Am not sure about the music because I had a child in 93 and 95 . A great decade apart from when Diana died 😟

My3littlestars · 16/08/2020 01:04

@AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit
Oh Heather Shimmer! Never left the house without wearing that!!

@WhatsTheFrequencyKennneth
They still stock it?? Guess what im buying tomorrow then?! 🤣

Goldistheanswer · 16/08/2020 01:05

I would so that I could spend more time with my darling dad. He passed away 3 years ago and I miss him so much. The 90s was an exciting decade for me, met my DH, bought a house and got married. Life was great as a young married couple, weekends away, nights out and few worries. Life since then has been one worry after another sadly.

Firebird83 · 16/08/2020 01:08

I was born in 1990 so the 90s were my young childhood, lots of good memories from that time.

enjoyingthequiet · 16/08/2020 01:48

I think it's really interesting that no one has mentioned the fear of AIDS. In 1989 I started at uni, we were given condoms like sweets and huge amounts of information & leaflets.

I remember us discussing (when drunk and more honest) how we felt terrified of catching this fatal disease. It hadn't really impinged on my consciousness much up to then, but it did at uni. And no cure at all then, nor did we know if there ever would be.

On the other points......I too remember the more carefree pre-children and pre-responsible jobs part of my life with nostalgia. What fun, even with new diseases around.....

KatherineJaneway · 16/08/2020 01:54

No chance

Amortentia · 16/08/2020 02:59

I’d love to go back to the 90s and enjoy my youth again. But, with one condition, I get to take my make up, skincare, hairdryer & GHDs with me🤣. I can’t believe how far beauty products have come on since then. I’m fascinated by the hair & make up of anyone in a 90s tv series and how much better everyone looks now.

I remember how bloody awkward it was to bring up condoms at the crucial moment. I’m glad this is something that has improved.

I totally agree! A relative got married in 1991 and had a really short layered bulky hairstyle and bright blue make up - she actually looks younger now. Although by the end of the 90s the trend was for very straight sleek hair, I didn’t get my GHDs until 2003 though when I was in 6th form
