Live behind a stable - fly infestation in kitchen :( any tips?

Hi,
I live behind a horse stable and so get swarms of flies in my kitchen. I’m at my wits end dealing with at least 9 at a time buzzing around the kitchen. Also, I gave stomach disease and a sensitive gut meaning even low level pathogens from these flies are enough to trigger nausea and Diarrhea esp as it’s a lot of flies which will have sat on horse poo.

I’ve tried:
-keeping windows shut (not great in this heat and they come in when I open the door to empty bins or hang laundry)
-plug in bug repeller ultrasonic noise thingy (doesn’t work at all)
-highly rated fly paper (also only caught 2 flies out of the 50 or so I’ve seen this week inside my house)
-Fly killer electric grid - zapped and killed about 10 or so flies (not bad but only really works when it’s dark outside for them to be attracted to the UV light and often they get up and escape after 1 zap)

  • ‘Rapid’ brand fly spray (barely works as have to spray it at it 5mm away for it to be effective and then effectively flood it in the stuff to kill it as otherwise it starts recovering within seconds

I’m tired of feeling so ill - what can I do? Tried and tested remedies only please. I wash all dishes in very hot water and soap and still get a poorly stomach.

Red top fly trap. Amazon about £10. They are amazing.

Have a look at flatcats ( sorry i can't post a link ) they are designed to keep cats on the house but let fresh air in , they are a tough mesh that is held in place with velcro.

Agree with fly screens, ours made a huge difference.

Is it private or commercial stables? Just wondering if they could be asked/made to store manure etc further away from your house to minimise the impact? Appreciate you’d probably still have flies but might lessen the impact?

My friend got air con in the end, as she couldn't bare to open the windows in certain months.

I second red top fly traps. Always have one on the go.

Lolalovesmarmite · 13/08/2020 13:39

Definitely red top fly traps outside. Also fly screens. We also use the net fly covers for any food left out and all crockery etc is kept in cupboards so they can’t walk on it.

I’d second finding out where the muck heap is at the stables and, if it’s really close, approach them about moving it.

Oops yes, definitely not inside, they do stink.

Ours is at the end of the garden, since we've been using them we don't get any flies inside

Please be aware with red to fly traps that they absolutely reek of s**t!!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 13/08/2020 13:54

We had those Red top things, next door kept horses and even with bug screen on the windows we got loads of flies, so put these in the trees away from the house between us and them, worked great, but they really do stink.

Flyscreens.

Life-changing.

That thing where you hang up a clear plastic bag containing water and some copper coins ?

JuicyJoo10 · 13/08/2020 23:04

Thanks everyone - will try those

We use things very similar to the red top but they don't stink anywhere near as much. Yellow and black plastic bottle version.
