Inspired by another thread. We're very much a tiny minority here, but I think we would be? We do have our unique health risks (cancer at a younger age, hypertension, diabetes). If that helps.

Yes of course. BAME stands for Back and Minority Ethnic. So you are Minority ethnic.

Fressia123 · 10/08/2020 08:31

What I think muddle things up is that in the US you can choose between Hispanic: White and Hispanic: non white. Or what someone like Cameron Diaz or Shakira? I look white my children look like Goldilocks' family you'd never have thought we're an ethnic minority/non white.

You need to stop worrying about what others think as they won't know about your background just by your looks.

BAME includes a variety of backgrounds and races.

With both my pregnancies I had to show them (US medical reports) saying that they had to test me for diabetes. In both cases I was questioned why I'd need them. Same for cancer screening.

This says more about them than you though as it is their lack of demand ignorance that has caused it.

All you can do is keep educating people. You are considered BAME.

RuffleCrow · 10/08/2020 08:42

Yes you're in an ethnic minority here, whatever you look like. It's about your background/ genetic makeup.

Certainly in America, hispanic people often suffer hugely from racism and poverty. Obviously if you go back far enough they are technically a varying mix of european, indigenous and sometimes african ethnicities but racism doesn't care about such technicalities.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 10/08/2020 08:42

What is Latinxs?

drspouse · 10/08/2020 08:45

BAME is a British term and most Hispanic people live in the Americas.

Fressia123 · 10/08/2020 08:47

Latinxs Is the gender neutral term for Latin American people (or from LatAm heritage)

Latino - male / Latina - female

@drspouse indeed but there's still some of us who have moved to the UK.

onedaysoonish · 10/08/2020 08:49

But doesn't 'Hispanic' include people from Spain? They are white Europeans surely?

drspouse · 10/08/2020 08:53

@Fressia123 in that case I guess it would depend on your ethnicity?
I say this because I have a good friend who lives in the US, is from Mexico originally, but whose parents were from Poland/Germany originally. She's white, blonde hair and blue eyes, so she isn't BAME and would put herself as "White" on UK forms I assume.
My DD is BAME but her birth mum was white and her birth dad was from an ethnicity that's unusual in the UK. We're very familiar with the "other" box.

Finfintytint · 10/08/2020 08:56

Drspouse. I’m dual heritage and don’t feature on British forms either. I I also tick the “ other” box too.

Fressia123 · 10/08/2020 08:56

The vast majority are "mestizos" a mix of indigenous and Spaniard. But that happened 500 years ago.

Yes Hispany does include Spaniards.

Unrelated side question, but how do you pronounce "Latinx"? Is it like "latinks"? "latinex"? Not being snide, I'm genuinely unsure!

drspouse · 10/08/2020 08:58

@ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings I don't think you do. It's just for people who are fed up of male= default.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 10/08/2020 08:59

How would you pronounce Latinxs?

drspouse · 10/08/2020 09:00

@Fressia123 though of course there are loads of Black Latino people as well.
I appreciate my pale friend is unusual!

Fressia123 · 10/08/2020 09:00

I've always heard it as Latin-x

OP posts:
onedaysoonish · 10/08/2020 09:01

Well Spanish people being white Europeans can't be considered BAME, so I think BAME is just Latinx. So Latinxs are BAME and Hispanics are not - assuming Hispanics are Latinos + Spanish?

drspouse · 10/08/2020 09:03

I suspect my friends are from the areas where they tend to say Hispanic (mainly Texas/Florida AIUI) so I guess I've only seen it written down.

I did spend a good deal of time in Southern California but we're going back 20 years and it wasn't as common then.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 10/08/2020 09:04

drspouse, do you mean it's not supposed to be pronounced a certain way or said outloud, but just used as a neutral option in writing?

RuffleCrow · 10/08/2020 09:08

They're a genetic mix of indigenous americans and Spanish or Portugese settlers @onedaysoonish. I think Hispanic and Latinx are used interchangeably.

People who are just Spanish are just filed under white european afaik.

drspouse · 10/08/2020 09:13

It's a lot wider than that @RuffleCrow - Cubans are Hispanic/Latino and are mainly Black. Brazilians are Latino and include all of Black, White and Indigenous.
