Is it possible to still have post natal depression after 20 years ?

There is a school of thought that postnatal depression is no different to any other episode of depression. It's just made harder by having to care for a baby, lack of sleep and lack of opportunity for self care.

Yes, I know a couple of people who had post Natal depression but never really ‘recovered’ (I can’t think of a better word to use).

I never got any help 20 years ago and feel like I have never recovered just learnt to hide it.

Pnd is depression triggered by something specific. Some people recover on their own, some need medication or therapy, some people learn to manage it. It stands to reason that left untreated it may not go away, not everyone will recover without help. Its not too late to ask for help though, talk to your doctor, you don't need to mask it, you can treat it.

I think PND can certainly develop into general depression or some other kind of mental illness if left untreated.

I had PND after both of my children and I ignored it the first time around and felt like it never really went away but I was no longer in a 'post natal' state. I plodded along until my second was born then decided to deal with it head on and started taking anti depressants.

I would recommend speaking to a doctor and try and unpick it all and work out how to fix it BrewThanks
