where can I run away to in the UK?

I am thinking of running away and starting over. Can anyone suggest where I can run to? Preferably a city, but not one that is too expensive. Has to have reasonable jobs market.

Excellent cultural and music scene in Nottingham too

BrokenBrit · 09/08/2020 16:13

I see you’ve ruled out Liverpool, but there are others in NW.
Manchester is bustling and diverse. Loads going on, friendly people.
Chester, smaller with beautiful countryside and history.
In your shoes I’d get a live in job though. Could you be a Nanny? You could go anywhere then!

North Leicestershire has some lovely areas and close to both Leicester and Nottingham.

Sheffield is the greenest city in the UK. Hastings and Lincoln are great too

Kez200 · 09/08/2020 16:17

Housekeeper or live in carer? Job with a roof and some time to make more permanent decision?

travailtotravel · 09/08/2020 16:17

Hoping you're ok. Its obvious to say but you know where you move to, you take you with you so the reasons you want to move might follow. I say this from a place of not being very happy at all with where I live right now and craving the newness and opportunity of somewhere else.

Sheffield, Newcastle, Lincoln, Lancaster would be great options.

Bluesheep8 · 09/08/2020 16:24

I echo what a pp said, you will take all that is troubling you with you. That said, I'd also say Nottingham.

pooopypants · 09/08/2020 16:29

Sheffield is awesome, I don't know what PP is on about.

Though the only 3 bed you'll find for 70k wouldn't be in one of the nicer areas, the market is very reasonably priced IMO.

Very central to motorways etc too

Geraniumblue · 09/08/2020 16:37

Boarding school house mistress, nanny, live-in carer or housekeeper if you want accommodation provided.
Exeter is very nice.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 09/08/2020 16:39

Newcastle is lush and I miss it every day.
Leicester is ok but job market is shit.

Bingobongo1 · 09/08/2020 16:44

Sheffield or surrounding villages look at Sheffield /Barnsley border also bordering onto West Yorkshire as these areas are good safe areas cheaper than some parts of Sheffield,
Leeds - similar to Sheffield some areas are really pricey but some areas are very reasonable.
York (although could be a little pricey would need to may be look further out but maybe live in jobs?),
Manchester,
Chester,
Lincoln,
Nottingham,
Norwich.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 09/08/2020 16:52

Glasgow is my home city and I love it - vibrant, great access to countryside, lots of different sections with different vibes (the west end is leafy and historical, the south side full of cafes and parks, the east end more down to earth), cheaper than edinburgh.

I also like Newcastle and considered relocating there myself.

InTheWings · 09/08/2020 17:20

Any skills or interest to be a live-in carer? Some provide all training. But you are pretty much stuck in the house with your clients.

Leeds.

supersop60 · 09/08/2020 17:27

Worcester. Very central for motorways, lovely community feel. (the river Severn floods every year, so be careful where you live!)

tinkywinkyshandbag · 09/08/2020 18:11

Is it just you or children/pets? If just you then you get get a job as alive in housekeeper or even housesitter for a while, see if you like the area.

If it was me, I'd go to Norwich.

funniestpersonyouknow · 09/08/2020 18:12

Derby is lovely - small city, loads of green spaces and friendly locals. Have been here 18 years and feel settled.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/08/2020 18:30

I'm from Derbyshire, wouldn't recommend Derby as a good city, it's incredibly run down and tired looking. Nottingham is a lot better.

HeronLanyon · 09/08/2020 18:31

Penzance.

HeronLanyon · 09/08/2020 18:33

Apols you say city and Penzance May be too small but it would be good as an escape. Good luck op.

There are definitely improvements to be made but we seem to be seeing more investment and some of the areas most in need are being targeted. I find Nottingham a bit big but I agree there are some great parts of the city. East Midlands as a whole has some really lovely parts - just a shame we're so far from the sea!
Arthersleep · 09/08/2020 19:22

Norwich is good. I lived there for a while. It's a fine city, as the signs tell you. Nice size if starting over. Quite a gentle place. Miles from anywhere. No one would find you there!

Sheffield has come a long way in recent years, but it's not really my cup of tea. Derby is ok in terms of size and economy. The city itself is somewhat dull, but the wider countryside and villages are lovely.

Bath and Bristol are fab, but expensive. Southampton and Portsmouth are not bad places.
Birmingham and Nottingham are ok, but a bit of a mixed bag. I think that some of the areas around Cambridge are somewhat affordable. Think that York is too.

Norwich would be my first recommendation though. I've moved around a lot, including starting out on my own. I bought a let's go/lonely planet guide to the UK and literally read up on every town and city before choosing a place to go.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/08/2020 19:39

@funniestpersonyouknow we're definitely lucky to have the peak district so close by! Plus it's still very affordable. I do love living here.

DappledThings · 09/08/2020 19:46

Interesting so many people said Sheffield. I've only been twice, day trips for meetings earlier this year but got a really good vibe from it. Just had a really good atmosphere and a huge, really nice looking park running alongside the train line. If I were in the market for relocating I would definitely be looking at it.

NothingIsWrong · 09/08/2020 19:49

How about looking for accommodation as a property guardian? That would be cheap enough to get you going anywhere

Kahlua4me · 09/08/2020 21:23

What about joining an agency providing live in care? Even if you only did it for 6 months it may give your head time to readjust and make a plan for your new future...
