where can I run away to in the UK?

I am thinking of running away and starting over. Can anyone suggest where I can run to? Preferably a city, but not one that is too expensive. Has to have reasonable jobs market.

What sort of city would you like? Are you ok? I like Bristol and Brighton

needtostartagain · 09/08/2020 14:47

I think they would be too expensive for me.

Sheffield. Cheerful, cheap and welcoming.

Do you have children?

Liverpool is my favourite city.

Liverpool or Manchester

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/08/2020 14:58

I find the people very friendly, it's a vibrant city with lots going on, great culture, pretty cheap. I don't live there but I would move there in a heartbeat if I didn't have a DC settled in school.

Sheffield's central - so easy access to wherever you want to go.

Population of 500,000 so a decent size. Plenty of work. Good transport - buses and trams. 2 unis, 2 football clubs. Joins onto Rotherham. Nice and hilly - good views, good access to the Pennines. Lots of parks, lots of lovely walks.

The economy is (or was) going through strong regeneration - not sure how Covid will affect it, but there should still be lots of work and opportunities in a city this size. You can buy a 3 bed terraced house for about £70,000.

Liverpool would be good for running away and starting over. It's got a very eclectic mix of people and I've always found it friendly and inclusive. There's lovely countryside to be found just outside the city too.... plus it's not an expensive city to rent or buy property (well depending which part, but you can find parts that are cheap but still quite nice.)

I like Sheffield. It has cheap bits, also very expensive bits. Very close to Peak District. Lots going on usually. Independent shops. Galleries. Bit far from the sea though.

Newcastle upon Tyne. Would probably be my choice actually. Small and quirky city, does its own thing - too far from any other large city to have much influence. Moors to the west, sea to the east.

Wankpuffin · 09/08/2020 15:08

Norwich.

Sunflower101 · 09/08/2020 15:09

I feel like running away right now, not seriously but sometimes, family life makes me feel like it!

Sheffield is great. Friendly, central, great transport links, lots of people from other areas.

However although you can get a 3 bed terrace for 70k occasionally, these are not in good areas. And I say that as someone with a max budget of 100k. You would be better looking at an ex local authority house a bit further out of the city

beautifulxdisasters · 09/08/2020 15:10

Newcastle or Sheffield!

FredaFrogspawn · 09/08/2020 15:12

I love Newcastle too. That would be my choice.

ClamDango · 09/08/2020 15:13

What sort of work are you looking for, have you got enough money to start over.

elfycat · 09/08/2020 15:14

I'd second Norwich - East Anglia is weirdly an 'out in the middle of nowhere' place. Where I am - Suffolk doesn't have a city - Bury St Eds can be more expensive than other places in Suffolk, and Ipswich has a poor reputation and both are fair sized towns (and not as bad as the locals think - I've lived in Luton and Portsmouth and Ipswich is lovely, but normal for a large town).

blacktop · 09/08/2020 15:15

I suppose it depends where you are

PolloDePrimavera · 09/08/2020 15:16

Are you ok? And I'm not being sarky. Sheffield and Manchester are 👍, although I also lived in Birmingham and loved it.

ChewingTurnips · 09/08/2020 15:16

Following with interest, I'm always looking on Rightmove for places to rent in the UK and then go on Indeed for a job nearby that would suit, pure fantasy at the moment.
Hope you're ok Op.

Lincoln? Strong university growth has really seen the city flourish, so much money has gone into development and improvement in the last few years. Plenty of green spaces, lovely people, lots of tech companies expanding/moving in to the area. Reasonable transport links to other cities, regular train services to London now, not too far from the coast. Good house prices, your money goes a lot further than it does down south!
