where can I run away to in the UK?

I am thinking of running away and starting over. Can anyone suggest where I can run to? Preferably a city, but not one that is too expensive. Has to have reasonable jobs market.

Norwich. Not as cold and wet as the west or north. Lovely city, loads of great pubs. 25 minutes from fantastic beaches. Good shopping, Norfolk Broads, very safe.

I've got about £15k I can access instantly and another 50k in the future, and a property I could sell to buy another place (if I did this would hope to substantially downgrade to give me cash to live off) or rent and have about £600 income per month after expenses. I would do any sort of work. I've fucked things up so badly I don't really have a trade or profession.

When you say ‘run away’ as this as in ‘oh shit they are going to break my legs’ or ‘i need a fresh start’?

Swansea is very cheap (well the surrounding areas/villages are), yet still feels city-ish

GreyGardens88 · 09/08/2020 15:23

If you're considering Yorkshire then I would recommend Leeds. Please don't move to Sheffield, it's really not very nice

QueenOfWinterfell · 09/08/2020 15:23

Can you give us some ideas of what you want and don’t want from a city?

needtostartagain · 09/08/2020 15:23

I've never considered Norwich. Or Lincoln. They both have the advantage that I don't know anyone from there so wouldn't need to worry about bumping into anyone I knew.

Sheffield a distinct possibility too - though my first love lives there still, I think. Doubt he would recognise me now though. Too much chance of running into large extended family (by marriage) in Liverpool I think.

Scotland?

blacktop · 09/08/2020 15:24

Posted too soon!

Dundee, if you get a decent area in or nearby it's alright. Has the things you need from a city and is in easy reach of the bigger cities when you want them too

ClamDango · 09/08/2020 15:25

Moving away isnt easy especially if you dont know the area or have any local ties and you dont want to end up buying somewhere and being stuck and unhappy. Whats your situation atm. Can you take a month off if you're working and go away to the coast or somewhere quiet to clear your head. What sort of things do you enjoy doing, could you look for a live in job somewhere.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/08/2020 15:26

Leeds?

needtostartagain · 09/08/2020 15:29

What I want from a city - affordable. But with strong jobs market so I can find work. Lots going on - so somewhere that would have lots of meetup groups for example so I can meet people. Safe (or as safe as a city can be). Ideally a city with greenery or at least close to nature.

@GreyGardens88 - why not Sheffield?

Is it just you? Definitely look at Stirling - it’s not that cold (definitely not as cold as Newcastle!). Small city, beautiful countryside close by, not too far from Glasgow and Edinburgh (so commutable if necessary).

rosiethehen · 09/08/2020 15:31

Newcastle

Affordable
Far away from everywhere
Safe
Friendly people

I was coercively controlled to move to somewhere I didn't know or have any local ties, it hasn't been easy and I am stuck and unhappy!

That could be quite a good idea!

Can you manage to try somewhere (any chance of working remotely?) and rent so that you can move if it doesn’t tick all your boxes?

CottonSock · 09/08/2020 15:35

Cardiff is great, but not very cheap any more

Mintjulia · 09/08/2020 15:37

Agree, Norwich is a good place, there’s work but not mad commuting or pressure. Truro is another one with a reasonable pace to life. What about Swansea?

Sootikinstew · 09/08/2020 15:48

Nottingham

Affordable housing, generally friendly people, lots of work opportunities, great transport links to anywhere. Clean, safe and lots of history. I love it here. 🙂

custardbear · 09/08/2020 15:53

I was going to say Nottingham too 😎

itistiime · 09/08/2020 16:02

Sheffield is lovely! I've no idea what PP means

Sandyd1035 · 09/08/2020 16:07

If I was going to relocate it would be up to the northeast ie south sheilds , tynemouth any where in that area , cheap friendly people but not sure about the job market .

Kahlua4me · 09/08/2020 16:09

Southampton, near the beach
Reading, lots of countryside nearby and the Thames
Bristol, lovely area. Lots going on and river, see and countryside nearby
Hastings, amazing place. Lots of eclectic friendly people in Old Town
