Help me solve the beep noise!!

Every now and then I hear a two tone beep-beep noise. I’ve only heard it when I’m in my bedroom, which is at the front of the house. There’s a busy main road outside. I generally have the window open all the time and I think the noise is outside.

It’s two beeps. One high then one lower. Like a doorbell ding dong but beeps. It sounds a bit like when the Hermes courier scanned a parcel they picked up once.

There’s no consistency to the timing of the beeps. I heard it at midnight last night, then twice in the last hour.

Beep beep.

I’ve googled weird beeping noise, two beeps outside, various combinations. It generally throws up results about alarms with batteries going. I don’t think it’s that.

It’s so weird and I want to know what is making the beep noises!!

Any ideas?!

We have recently heard a beep like that when sitting in our garden. It sounds like a very low toned doorbell. We live fairly rurally and we are stumped as to what it is. No help to you though - sorry!

OldFloweryCardigan · 08/08/2020 12:38

My neighbour has installed a "Ring" doorbell which makes a noise In the street, audible to me even with the windows closed, when someone presses it. I've been hearing it for a while but only just twigged what it was. Could it be something like that?

LastResponder · 08/08/2020 12:39

I had this recently. Realised it was the sound my neighbour's electric car makes once it's finished charging. Could be something similar to that?

OldFloweryCardigan · 08/08/2020 12:44

Some burglar alarms make a beep-beep when activated or turned off. Has a neighbour recently installed an alarm?

LittleMissNaice · 08/08/2020 12:48

DPs car with remote locking key thingy does this when he walks away with the key and it locks.

Glamazoni · 08/08/2020 12:49

Could it be a prank? I have a little device that makes a beep at random intervals and you hide it to annoy someone.

Tuemay · 08/08/2020 12:50

We love opposite an apartment block and when someone buzzes in, it beeps.

Mumteedum · 08/08/2020 12:53

Could be the scanners the postie uses? They do that for parcels with royal mail. Quite loud so you'd hear it if it's for a neighbour.

mnahmnah · 08/08/2020 12:57

Some cars or their key fobs make that noise when locked

Littlepond · 08/08/2020 12:59

Ooh thank you for all the replies! Some good ideas. I don’t think it is a postman because I’ve looked out of the window after the beep and not seen anyone. Electric car is an interesting suggestion - my neighbour is a car fanatic and owns several so he may have recently got an electric one - how do they charge? Would it be in his garage?
The erratic timing makes me think it is person related rather than something beeping in error if that makes sense...

It’s the fact that it sounds so loud like it’s right outside my window that puzzles me! Sound is weird though isn’t it, can carry strangely

Scops owl.

Mumteedum · 08/08/2020 16:58

I've got a mystery beep too but sounds diff to yours. I'm sure mine is next door. It's not that loud but just at a pitch that makes me jump. I wondered if it was a cat/bird/mole scarer or something Confused

SamsMumsCateracts · 08/08/2020 17:02

My laptop make a noise like that whenever I plug or unplug it from the mains. Could your neighbour be using on in the room next to your bedroom? It might explain the odd timings and it happening twice if the lead has been accidentally pulled out and put back in.

SamsMumsCateracts · 08/08/2020 17:02

Meant to also say that it is surprisingly loud, makes me jump every time.

FilmRec · 08/08/2020 17:42

Hmm, I kept hearing a similar muffled sound really late last night, thought it was my laptop in its bag, as I'd used it earlier. Nope. Eventually I stuck my head out of the window and I think it was some kind of duck/wildfowl Grin was a really unusual call though. Hmm

Littlepond · 09/08/2020 10:21

Well the mystery beep woke me at 4.30am today! My windows are all open but maybe it is in my house?! Argh

My daughter just heard the mystery beep too. Until now I’m the only one who has heard it and I was beginning to think it was some kind of auditory hallucination 😂 but it definitely exists! My daughter thinks it was the parcel scanning thing. But at 4am? Hmmm.

Presumably it's not Phoebe's smoke alarm 😂

here

Ariela · 09/08/2020 11:11

Flat battery on smoke alarm in loft?

PigletJohn · 09/08/2020 11:29

it might be a "chime" on a burglar alarm. Mine is set so it does that when an external door is opened, even if the alarm is not set.

This gives warning if, say, someone opens the back door or garage.

In summer, when I have doors unlocked and opened, they will cause a chime if moved by the wind.

Control pads for alarms are usually close to the front door (and sometimes also the master bedroom) so you would hear it best near them.
