Londoners - why don't people like Sadiq Khan?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/08/2020 20:52

I think he's alright. Certainly an improvement on the previous incumbent!

Can the issues with the congestion charge and removal of free travel for under 18s be laid firmly at his door? If so, how?

Otherwise, I see all these casual references to Sadiq Khan being single handedly responsible for the increase in knife crime and all sorts of other accusations.

Please spell it out for me if you think he is a poor Mayor ... how and why?

I want to like him and I’m a natural Labour supporter but I have trouble really seeing what he’s done. I live in London and struggle to think of anything where I go ‘ah, yes, that’s cos of Sadiq’.

I’m sure I could be more engaged or pay more attention but equally he has a comms issue as I just don’t think what he does cuts through.

I agree.

Hate him? They love him - the liberals voted him in over a highly efficient opponent.

If you’re hearing any disapproval of him it’s from those of us not blinkered by wokeness, and who can see the guy does F all. The previous two mayors were very active. Jeez, Khan was even complaining how depressed, weak and lonely he felt during lockdown - despite the fact he has a family. Still lonely! That’s not someone who should be in a position of power. But welcome to the future OP.

MistressMounthaven · 09/08/2020 08:04

London is a cesspit of violence and stabbings and general lawlessness
You blame the Mayor and the Met - when it is of course the middle class drug takers who provide a very lucrative market for the dealers.
They should come down hard on them, make sentences longer - but it won't make anyone very popular.

He is a Labour mayor when there is a a Conservative Gov - he won't get support to make changes.

Khan’s opponent had a disgusting racist campaign. He forget that he was meant to be the mayor for everyone in London and tried to win votes with a vile racist campaign. That’s why he failed to get the position.
ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 09/08/2020 09:27

Zac Goldsmith’s campaign suddenly turned into a nasty racist campaign

I’m not sure if he would have won but this will always haunt him and rightly so. Thankfully backfired on him and a number of Tories spoke out against what he said.

The previous mayors both were very active in courting the press that’s why they appeared more active

MySweatyPie · 09/08/2020 09:28

Because he is Asian Muslim and not very charismatic or handsome like Rishi. Hth.

Darker · 09/08/2020 09:40

I have trouble really seeing what he’s done. I live in London and struggle to think of anything where I go ‘ah, yes, that’s cos of Khan..

Mr Johnson was full of big, money-spaffing ideas, like the Garden Bridge. Was that better? The ‘Boris bikes’ idea wasn’t his.

Sadiq has been dealt a very different hand - austerity, huge cuts to public services and the ensuing challenges.

I liked his ‘London is open’ campaign.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/08/2020 09:46

Sadiq has been dealt a very different hand - austerity, huge cuts to public services and the ensuing challenge are you joking? I’m not sticking up for Boris but factually he came to be London mayor when the financial crisis hit- until this year Khan has had an easy ride, he just spent too much time on Twitter and political point scoring!

Btw I love the way the only way to say how great Khan is is by comparing him to Boris- what has he done?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/08/2020 09:47

Because he is Asian Muslim and not very charismatic or handsome like Rishi. Hth ignorance at its best, Rishi Sunak is a Hindu!!

FatalDistraction · 09/08/2020 09:50

Rishi Sunak is a bit of alright Wink

Stuckforlong · 09/08/2020 09:51

I voted for him and don't dislike him personally. However he's been a crap mayor- knife crime has spiked, now kids under 18 will have to pay for travel which means families in poverty will force children to walk pushing them further into danger of being recruited into gangs.
He also seems to blame the government a lot for the lack of decisions made its always the governments fault that I'm left wondering do we need a London mayor if he doesn't have a say?

PimlicoJo · 09/08/2020 09:53

I think he's utterly useless. Only interested in political showboating and point scoring. He should be acting in the interests of all Londoners and his behaviour during the pandemic has been appalling. He should have been voted out by now but we're stuck with him for another year.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 09/08/2020 09:58

He just isn't a presence. I barely see him doing anything. I can't stand Boris, but he at least was in the public eye. I want more from a mayor.

Also, definitely needs to make a stand on getting free travel back for the kids. Its a lifesaver for a lot of families.

Nothing to do with the colour of his skin ffs.

BlackSwan · 09/08/2020 09:59

Thank you (Not) Mr Khan for extending the congestion charge to all times of day all week long. I think he’s a little rat.

CommunistLegoBloc · 09/08/2020 10:02

SE London here. Voted for him previously, will not again. He can't define what a woman is, he's thrown our rights under the bus and I won't forgive that.

Not thrilled about increasing CC times in the middle of a global pandemic whilst simultaneously telling people to avoid public transport but also use London attractions and restaurants...

VashtaNerada · 09/08/2020 10:06

We do like him. We voted for him Confused

LtJudyHopps · 09/08/2020 10:33

I wanted to like him, I just don’t. I’m NE London, couldn’t give a crap about the colour of his skin. But what has he actually achieved for London? The bus hopper fares is a good idea granted, but that’s where it stops.
The ULEZ scheme which means many people will be having to change their diesel cars after the government told everyone diesel was better than petrol!
All the bike lanes that have caused months of traffic and air pollution, they’re so badly designed bike riders won’t use them!
He was conveniently quiet when Corona kicked off.
His response to knife crime being that it’s part of living in a city. It shouldn’t be! I know he is not to blame for this but I think it’s a massive thing he should concentrate more effort in to.

Rainallnight · 09/08/2020 10:42

@Darker, I’m not saying I liked Johnson. I’m saying that’s my impression of Khan. I’d like him to get re-elected so if lots more people feel like me, that’s a problem for him.

FortunesFavour · 09/08/2020 11:00

I’m a Londoner and voted for him. Wish I hadn’t now though. Totally useless and absent on knife crime, damaged London’s reputation with stance over Trump blimp (Trump is an arse, but London mayor role is not to damage trade relations due to Khan’s ego), Sunday service on tubes during lockdown just when keyworkers need to distance.

He’s been a massive disappointment. I’m surprised so many pp’s say they’d vote for him again. I don’t know anyone who would.

IsadoraQuagmire · 09/08/2020 11:47

He's shit. As were Johnson and Livingstone when they were mayor.
I'm still annoyed Peter Whittle didn't win,

TheYellowOfTheEgg · 09/08/2020 11:54

I like the Hopper fare, but I don't like Khan. I think he has authoritarian tendencies common to the left, which have come to the surface with Coronavirus. He's always bleating on about face masks and more restrictions.

TheYellowOfTheEgg · 09/08/2020 11:56

He also chants the TWAW line without thinking about its impact on women.

Balhammom · 09/08/2020 11:57

Ok I’ll bite.

He seems pretty bland at best and lacks any aspiration or clarity of vision for London. In real terms, he has done and achieved remarkably little during his tenure.

ThePlantsitter · 09/08/2020 12:00

I like him. SE London.

The extension to the ULEZ is a massive pain in the arse for me but given you can smell the pollution most days round here and a kid down the road died from it, it's a bold, necessary move that I'm sucking up for the greater good.
