No alcohol on antibiotics

I have a cupboard of bottles of spirits at home. I might sound like and alcoholic. I don't drink every day or every evenings. Some evenings I do like to have a drink. I do it more so for relaxation or for meditation.

Like for example, when I do an online grocery shop, my mother likes to sit down with me and she wants me to shop for her too. She has a different way of shopping online. She wants me to trawl through the special offer pages and she gets agitated if the stuff she wants isn't on offer. Honestly, it's a big headache with her and I can't get through the process without a drink and a vape. If I was still smoking, I would have a pack of fags gone.

I work as a nanny. Some days are better than others. I'm having one of them days at work. I'm expected to be a miracle worker for this family.

I'm stuck in work with a child who is off form. The parents are doing what they do best. Wanting to be a childless couple dumping the load on me and expecting me to be a miracle worker. They have a party at the weekend so have chosen to continue as normal ignoring their child's cough. They have a lot of people coming to a party. We'll good luck to them but I won't be there and I won't be involved.

It's just one of them days where I badly need a drink. My day is still not over. I was running out the door to work this morning and my mother wants me to do online shopping for her tonight. This time to a pharmacy. Not for meds but for beauty creams. It doesn't matter what time of the night I might be allowed home at. It could be 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 at night. If I want a cup of tea, I will clearly have to pay rent monies to my employer and to my mother.

I badly need a drink when I'm allowed to get home but I'm on antibiotics for an dental abscess. The instructons says no alcohol. What do I do

You cannot touch alcohol on metronizadol.

Sounds like you need to look for a new job.

fucknuckle · 06/08/2020 19:30

i’m a recovering alcoholic (6.5 years sober) and even i didn’t drink on metronidazole.

i don’t drink anything any more. you’re planning on prioritising booze over your health. this is something that really should concern you.

Extraction20 · 06/08/2020 19:32

Op, You sound desperate. If you need a break, you can ring in sick. You don't actually have to make yourself sick. You need to get out of there.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 06/08/2020 19:38

My friend drank on that anti-biotic. She was seriously sick for hours. One bathroom in her house, she had to crawl into the garden at one point to let someone use the loo and be copiously sick behind a bush.

If you cannot Cole without alcohol I would suggest you have a drink problem and should discuss this with your GP or even speak to AA for some help.

YellowWave · 06/08/2020 19:41

I really wouldnt consider myself an alcoholic. I don't drink every day. I can take it or leave it most of the time. When I do sit down to have a drink, that's exactly what I have. I have 1, maybe 2 drinks the most and I drink it slowly through a straw. I've just had a day from fcuking hell and there's still no end in sight to my day.

AfterSchoolWorry · 06/08/2020 19:48

I must be bulletproof. I've drank on Flagyl before without a problem. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nat6999 · 06/08/2020 19:50

I know someone who kissed their partner who had been drinking while they were taking metronidazole & threw up for 12 hours. Leave at least 3 days after you finish it as well.

Wolfiefan · 06/08/2020 19:55

Having a day from hell means you are desperate for a drink?
That’s an indication of a dependence of alcohol. You need to address that.

roboticaw · 06/08/2020 19:56

So many points to flag up OP! Oh dear, I'm
So sorry. You don't seem happy at all.
Firstly, I'm a dentist. Please don not drink on metronidazole. Trust me. You'll regret it.
Secondly, just don't drink? If you can't resist the temptation, we'll, then I'd consider you have a problem.
Thirdly, Covid? You should be isolating just now, and maybe contacting NHS24 for advice.
And lastly * "The parents are doing what they do best. Wanting to be a childless couple dumping the load on me and expecting me to be a miracle worker.*"

I think you need a new job. Whatever your personal feelings are, these guys are your employers, and if they want to dump the load on you, well you ARE a nanny. Maybe they feel that's part of your job?
It's not nice to slag your employers off like that

YellowWave · 06/08/2020 20:07

I'm not the one with covid symptoms. It's one of their children with symptoms and another one of the or children has a milder cold. They are sticking their head in the sand and turning a blind eye and saying its not covid. They weren't tested so I don't know how they know. They have a party at the weekend and are wishing it's not covid.

Do not drink on that antibiotic! You will likely be extremely sick. I take antibiotics everyday (erythromycin) and am ok with a few drinks but that one is well known to be nasty with alcohol. I believe there’s only about 4 antibiotics you shouldn’t drink with and that’s definitely one of them!

(It’s been a few years since I researched this, 7 years I’ve been on erythromycin so forgive me if my numbers are a bit off or advice has changed, I know the advice for that bad boy hasn’t)

gamerchick · 06/08/2020 20:12

@YellowWave

I checked my lunch bag, it is that antib beginning with Met and ending in zole
Well, it's a good way of killing your appatite for alcohol, because you'll have your head in the bog for a while. Like for real.
FizzAfterSix · 06/08/2020 20:19

On the few occasions I’ve taken antibiotics I’ve been fine with a glass or 2 or champagne. It depends on your tolerance and constitution.
Calling OP because she is gasping for a drink after a hellish day is a hysterical over reaction.
Only on Mumsnet.

CottonSock · 06/08/2020 20:19

I was on that for a tooth abscess. Went for dinner and accidentally ordered a pudding with booze in. Luckily remembered before eating it. I wouldn't touch a drop *and I also drink too much usually.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 06/08/2020 20:22

metronidazole

Not unless you're looking to vomit your intestines through your mouth. Really, really wouldn't. That's one motherfucker of an AB, it takes no prisoners, just leaves you for dead.

mineofuselessinformation · 06/08/2020 20:24

I guess only you can decide whether or not you think even one drink is worth it.
Lots of people here have given you very good advice, but your last post seems to indicate you're going to ignore it anyway.
If that's the case, I don't understand why you posted at all. Hmm

FizzAfterSix · 06/08/2020 20:24

Calling OP an alcoholic because she is gasping for a sharpener is unreasonable, I meant to say.

Purpleartichoke · 06/08/2020 20:27

I had to take that recently. They made it clear that even something like alcohol in mouthwash could make me extremely ill.

It’s not like other meds where is just not a good idea or might reduce efficacy. You will regret that drink.

sleepyhead · 06/08/2020 20:30

Good god no. Op, you're sounding like you maybe think it'll be worth it...

...seriously, you will regret it so much. It will make your day so far feel like a day on the beach.

You will be so, so ill.

Hippofrog · 06/08/2020 20:31

Please don’t even drink until 48 hrs after you have finished the course of anti b’s and not mouthwash with alcohol. It’s an evil drug

Purpleartichoke · 06/08/2020 20:31

Oh and I rarely drink. When I was taking that antibiotic and could not drink, I thought about how nice a drink would be every day. That was months ago. I didn’t have a drink during the meds and still haven’t had one because truthfully I didn’t really want one But something about being told no made me feel like I was being deprived.

gamerchick · 06/08/2020 20:34

This isn't an ordinary antibiotic.

If you're at the point in your work where feeling like 'that' would be possibly worth it, then it's probably time to find a different job tbh.

TinkersTailor · 06/08/2020 20:35

I made the mistake of drinking on metronidazole. I thought I'd be fine after previously drinking on amoxicillin and flucloxacillin.

I was not fine.

Flushes (my entire body turned red), I felt like I was on fire, dizziness, itching, diarrhoea and vomiting like I've never experienced in my life. It was like something out of the exorcist.
I only had two drinks.
Don't do it.

YellowWave · 06/08/2020 20:35

I'm home now. Usually I'm not hunfor dinner in the evenings. I ate a small meal so I can take my last anti b for the day.

Usually a drink now takes the edge of things for the rest of the evening. I'm fighting the urge for a drink. I had to ak my mother to lay off me tonight and I will help her at the weekend when I should be more free and available to help her. Just not tonight.

My last day on the antibiotics will be Sunday and it looks like itight be Tuesday night by the time I will be able for a drink.

Thank you so much for all of the advice by the way. When I wrote this, I was thinking maybe I might have a drink anyways but reading all the replies has made me think otherwise.

I need to take these antibiotics properly and hopefully I will be able to manage OK without a drink.
