Recommend an Energy Supplier?

I have to leave Scottish Power after their latest monumental cockup.

I need to get gas and electric from someone else, I'm based in West Yorkshire. Any recommendations? I'm desperate for a company that doesn't set up second accounts in my name, take the second payment and fail to explain how it happened. Or a company that won't email asking if I will come back to them after two years away the day after they took a direct debit for continuing services - and still fail to explain how it happened. Or send random 'I'm sorry you are leaving us' emails when I hadn't actually wanted to leave. Or totally mess up boiler cover and get the same boiler serviced three times in four months as part of the 'yearly service' and insist that I wouldn't be covered if I didn't. Or randomly void that cover.

(I may be a little frustrated. The people I have spoken to at Scottish Power have been lovely)

Any suggestions that don't include British Gas very welcome.

I switched to bulb and am very happy. Straightforward switch, saving me money and easy to deal with if I’ve ever had to contact them.

Octopus are Which recommended and really good for reasonably priced green energy. I've been with them for a couple of years now and no complaints. We have a fully green deal with renewable electricity and offset gas.
(If you're interested in signing up, PM me for a code which gets us both £50 credit on our accounts!)

dementedpixie · 05/08/2020 19:02

I'm with Octopus and they've been good. They ask for monthly meter readings and produce an up to date balance within a day so you can see exactly what you are using. They also have a referral scheme so if you use a friend link both of you get £50 off your bill. I will put mine in case you are interested. Good luck with whoever you choose.

Weve been with Bulb fir a few yearz now as I like their green credentials, they haven't cocked up snd prices are competitive. My link if you go with them !!! www.bulb.me/edwinas6861?utm_campaign=app-referral-share&utm_medium=copy-link&utm_source=copy-button

Meckity1 · 05/08/2020 19:14

Thank you. Those recommendations (and links!) are really helpful.

Never touch eon with a barge pole

As soon as I’ve paid off my £500 debt due to them dropping my direct debit to 1/2 and me still paying an extra £30 a month on top I will be swapping to octopus or bulb

RachelLyg · 05/08/2020 20:31

I like bulb too. They keep adjusting my payments so that I don’t end up with a big credit / debt.

I wouldn’t touch EON or British Gas again. For overcharging and then making it really difficult to get your own money back.

nevertoooldforindie · 05/08/2020 20:35

Defiantly wouldn’t recommend Together Energy we’ve had a nightmare with them. Switched to igloo and so far very impressed . Very transparent bills. Helpful staff and you get 3% Interest on any credit. Again they do a £50 each referral code. I’ll post mine in case you are interested

RachelLyg · 05/08/2020 20:38

Just to clarify, the reason bulb adjusted my payments a lot in the first year was due to the figures I gave them, which were incorrect figures from British Gas. Now I’m into my 2nd year with them, the monthly payments are the same each month.

Note - I took British Gas to the ombudsman for cocking up and overcharging.

British Gas!!!!!

We had house cover, gas and electric. We went through a wonderful time of the lights blowing everytime the central heating came on, and this was October, so getting colder. I took day after day after day of annual leave to stay home and wait for British Gas, who regularly failed to turn up. The final straw was when I got a call from the engineer, who I think had left the job before mine and was checking out his next ticket. He called me and said, "It looks like an electrical problem, but I'm only qualified to work with gas." Funnily enough, we switched soon after that.

(something to do with wires channelled close to the pipes)

Lots of recommendations for Bulb and Octopus. I like the sound of these, and I like the sound of it being a little more eco friendly. DH may be working from home more, I'm a SAHM and son has health issues, so lots of electric and gas being used, no matter how often I go around and turn things off.

Have you tried a free comparison site like uswitch or Martin Lewis Cheap Energy Club?

Last time I used them So were best for me, and I’ve just renewed again 18 months later and am in the process of switching to Avro.

You can filter by all sorts of options - customer rating being one of them. Good idea to have your last bill handy so you can get a realistic quote. My saving this time is £230 for the year Smile

MissClementine · 05/08/2020 23:29

Bulb, been with them two years and very happy with them.

ChangingStates · 06/08/2020 00:04

Octopus. Green energy, reasonably priced, you can adjust your payments. Been with them 6 months and happy so far.

RachelLyg · 06/08/2020 15:49

Bulb say they are around 10% cheaper than BG. Now that my monthly payments have settled down, that looks about accurate.

Brilliant thread. I’m placemarking. I’ve had horrific problem with ScottishPower and am just putting together the work to leave them. They also set up a second account for me and threatening to take me to court for £3K I don’t owe them. They’ve closed my account t randomly twice. They’ve registered the wrong meters. They refused to set up my account because they couldn’t “find” my gas meter but wouldn’t do a site visit. They keep changing my address to next door. I’m sick of it all now.
